University of New Haven Behavioral Intervention Team
The Behavioral Intervention Team is not an emergency response team. If there is an immediate threat to a student or the University of New Haven community, or if there is a medical or mental health emergency, please call 911 or contact the University Police Department at 203-932-7070 or through the LiveSafe app.
The Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) is dedicated to enhancing safety and security through a collaborative approach by proactively identifying, assessing, and managing situations that may pose a threat to the Charger Community. The BIT encourages the community's active involvement in maintaining safety, security, and our campus community’s well-being. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the team provides a centralized and coordinated assessment and intervention process to identify and assist community members displaying concerning or disruptive behaviors, helping promote a safe campus community.
The State of Connecticut’s Public Act 13-3 (Sec. 92, Section 10a-156a), An Act Concerning Gun Violence Prevention & Children’s Safety, passed on April 3, 2013, mandates colleges and universities to create security plans and to train threat-assessment teams. As such, the University developed its Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) to serve as a centralized threat assessment team and for referrals of concern from students, faculty, staff, or community members.
BIT uses a proactive approach that balances the concerns of campus community members and the overall safety of the campus.
The team collaborates, collects information, identifies risks, and intervenes when appropriate in an effort to protect individuals from harming themselves or others. The Behavioral Intervention Tean (BIT) was established to:
- Receive reports of disruptive, problematic, or concerning and/or disruptive behavior from students, faculty, staff, and community members.
- Conduct an inquiry/investigation.
- Perform a threat assessment.
- Determine the best mechanisms for support and response.
Reports may come from anyone, including, but not limited to, co-workers, community members, friends, colleagues, etc.
In order to assist the reporting process and to ensure the most appropriate response, the REPORT IT page has various reporting options.
Report It! Don't Ignore It! - Reporting Options
The Behavioral Incident Report is an electronic form designed to enable the University community to report highly disruptive and/or concerning behaviors. In this context, an incident is an event that does not warrant immediate police or medical intervention.
In the event of an emergency that requires immediate intervention, the reporter should call 911 or contact the University Police Department at (203) 932-7070 or through the LiveSafe app.
