Maddy Derosia ’19 experiencing life in an athletic department.

My first couple weeks at Central Connecticut State University have already been a great learning experience for me. On the first day, I definitely was nervous, however I started to feel comfortable very quickly. My supervisor took me around the building and introduced me to everyone. Everyone that I have met has been really nice and willing to help.

The culture within Central’s athletic department is currently pretty laid back and relaxed, however I feel as though it would be different during the course of the regular school year rather than in the summer. Everyone, from the coaches, office workers, and other interns have been very friendly, so it has been a great environment to work and learn in.

This type of office culture definitely fits my personality. Working within the athletic department reminds me of working on a team, which is something that I am used to and love. I am given my own daily tasks to do, so I am able to be independent, but at the same time the tasks that I am doing relate to what my supervisor is doing so we are able to work together to accomplish bigger goals. I would describe myself as someone who can easily adapt to any environment that they are in. So while I am enjoying the current laid-back culture, I know that I would also be able to work well if the pace was changed to a more intense/fast-paced one.

Central is a place that I would like to work in in the future. I believe that within an athletic department the people that you are surrounded by either really make or break the job, and the people here most definitely make it. The only thing that I do not like about working in an office is having to be inside all day. In the past I have worked my summers as a camp counselor, so I am used to being able to enjoy being outside. However, besides that, Central is the type of environment that I could see myself thriving in in the future.
