A collection of 32 paintings and drawings by John Stobart, one of the most pre-eminent maritime artists in the world, will be on display at the Chauncey Stillman Gallery at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts of the University of New Haven through June 25.
Stobart will talk about his work on Thursday, June 23, at 7 p.m., preceded by a 6 p.m. reception. There is limited seating for the talk, and reservations are required. For more information or reservations, contact Kristen Brady at kbrady@lymefs.newhaven.edu or 860.434.3571, ext. 121.
"The pieces in the exhibit, ‘Ports and Passages: Remembered,’ were specially selected because they are representative of pieces created throughout Stobart’s career," said Marguerite d’Aprile Quigley, director of the Center for Arts Programming at the College. "The exhibit includes pieces done in Mr. Stobart’s days in art school and culminates with present day works."
Stobart and The Stobart Foundation have been associated with Lyme Academy College for more than 25 years and have supported many talented Lyme students as Stobart Foundation Fellows.
"It is really an honor that we have the chance to exhibit Mr. Stobart’s work and we are especially grateful for Mr. Stobart’s and his foundation’s continued support of the college," said campus dean, Todd Jokl.
Stobart is best known for his harbor scenes that depict America’s ports in the 19th century. His work is part of the collections of many major museums and maritime galleries, as well as private collectors.
Born in Leicester, England, Stobart realized in his student days that an essential part of becoming a professional artist would be to sell his work and began to exhibit small landscapes painted in the countryside outside London and along the river Thames.
Stobart also sketched during a trip to South Africa and after he had immigrated to Canada. After he visited New York and saw his large new originals disappear into private collections throughout the United States, Stobart initiated the idea of publishing limited edition prints of his more important works and established Maritime Heritage Prints.
He also publishes a semiannual newsletter, "Palette Scrapings." In 1986 a large format book on his work, "STOBART, The Rediscovery of America’s Maritime Heritage," was published displaying some 75 major paintings.
The Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts is located at 84 Lyme St., and the Chauncey Stillman Gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.; Friday from 10 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.; and Saturday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. It is closed on Sundays.

After she graduates with her bachelor’s degree in international affairs in May, Allison Mahr ’24 will head to the Republic of Georgia with the support of a Boren National Security Fellowship. She’s excited to use the award to build her skills and, ultimately, make an impact in the post-conflict reconstruction of the region.
