Hello, Chargers! Welcome back to campus! After a lengthy summer break, it is hard to believe that another academic year has already begun. The quiet days of summer on campus have come to an end as campus is busy again, and the University is now filled with students, both new and returning, conversations, and, most importantly, Charger spirit! Whether you are a first-year student or a returning student reading this, know that the beginning of a new semester always brings out a mixture of different emotions, from excitement to anticipation.
This summer, I had the opportunity to spend time in Jamaica with my family. Being home for the summer gave me the chance to step away from the fast-paced routine of college and just enjoy time with family, relax, and reconnect with familiar places. I truly believe that there is something special about returning home after spending months away at school. It's safe to say that even though college has become a major aspect of my life, being back home reminded me of the people and places that have helped shape me into the person I am today.
Still, being away from campus made me realize how much can happen during a semester, and how quickly it flies by. College can sometimes feel like a constant cycle of classes, assignments, meetings, work, and extracurricular activities. It’s extremely easy for us to become so focused on everything that needs to get done, to the point where we forget to appreciate the experiences happening around us and to take care of ourselves. Trust me, it happened to me a few times.
Spending my summer with a clear mind gave me the opportunity to reflect on the past year and think about what I want for the year ahead. If you haven’t given the year ahead much thought yet, now is a great time to start 😉.
'Makes campus feel like a home away from home'
Now that I am back at the University of New Haven, there is that familiar feeling that comes with returning to campus. The residence halls, classrooms, and familiar faces make campus feel like a home away from home. In addition to this, it is exciting to know that a new semester means new opportunities. There will be new classes to take, new friendships to build, organizations to join, events to attend, and memories to make.
For first-year students, please remember that you do not have to have everything figured out right away. Finding the routine that works best for you, getting comfortable on campus, and figuring out what you enjoy will all take time, as one of the best parts of college is discovering who you are while creating a community around you.
For returning students, this is the chance to think about what you would like to do differently this year. Maybe there is a club that you've been meaning to join or a campus event you have never attended. Or maybe your goal is to simply become more organized, take better care of yourself, or make more time for the people around you. Regardless of what you hope to achieve, the beginning of a new semester gives you the opportunity to set new goals and work toward them.
Therefore, as we begin another academic year, I hope we can take a moment to appreciate the opportunity we all have to be here. The summer break may have given us the time to rest, but now it is time to reconnect, learn something new, get involved, and make the most of our time here.
So again, welcome back, Chargers! Whether you spent your summer working, traveling, or relaxing, I hope you arrived for the new year with a restored sense of energy and excitement. Cheers to a new academic year filled with growth, new experiences, new opportunities, and more memories!
