About the Workshops

The University of New Haven's Communication, Film, & Media Studies Department is honored to partner with FOX61 as part of the Hope for CT Community Outreach Campaign to promote safe driving. With access to University of New Haven's state-of-the-art production facilities, participants will receive first-hand training on script writing, camera equipment, voice-over production and editing software to create high production value PSA’s.

The workshops will be taught by University of New Haven's adjunct faculty and filmmaker, Nicki Chavoya. University of New Haven Film and TV students will train, support participants along with participate in the workshops and to have an opportunity complete the workshop with a professional, high production value PSA (Public Service Announcement) ready to submit.

Tom Garrett, Chair, Communication, Film, and Media Studies Department will supervise and provide additional support and access to resources, world-class facilities and equipment which include University of New Haven’s TV studio and editing suites, located at the Laurel Vlock Convergent Media Center.

Tom has produced numerous documentaries and PSA’s that remove the ‘stigma’ related to recovery, including - The Secret World of Recovery, that look at the positive and uplifting side of changed life’s of young people celebrating ‘recovery’. The Secret World of Recovery was the Sarasota Film Festival’s record-breaking screening which included a ‘in conversation’ after multiple times. Tom was one of the original inspirational founders of ‘Reach Out Recovery’ with USA Today and NY Times bestselling novelist/journalist and Philanthropist Leslie Glass who he produced The Secret World of Recovery for.
