Female\Feminist/2017 examines shifting considerations of how "female" fits into feminism and feminist art today, featuring a diverse and inclusive selection of artists. The exhibition, co-curated by Alva Greenberg and Nancy Gladwell includes diverse media and approaches to art as well, ranging from works on paper and sculpture to painting, photography, and animation.

A reception will take place on Friday, September 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public, and all are welcome to attend and contribute their thoughts and voices.

On Saturday, October 7, Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, CT will host a reading of Vagina Monologues in conjunction with the Female\Feminist/2017 exhibition. The performance is scheduled for 5 PM.

A panel discussing the exhibition and related themes will take place on Thursday, October 12 at Lyme Academy College at 6PM. Panelists include exhibition co-curators Nancy Gladwell and Alva Greenberg, as well as featured artists Lissa Rivera and Siona Benjamin, as well as others to be announced. The panel will be moderated by Patricia Hickson, Emily Hall Tremaine Curator of Contemporary Art at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Arts.

This exhibition reconsiders what it is to be female and how gender relates to feminism in contemporary society. As Gladwell states, "Not all females are feminist, and not all feminists are female." To tackle critical dialogues around contemporary feminism, Gladwell and Greenberg draw on an inclusive group of artists and voices across a range of ethnicities, sexual orientation and prior societal expectations. Amongst other issues, this exhibition challenge notions of how women are and should be perceived.

Gladwell is Associate Professor of Painting and Foundation and Chair of the Faculty Council at Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts. She has exhibited all over the world, including as a visiting artist at the 2011 Venice Bienale, Marist College Program. She was a two-time recipient of the Greenshield’s Memorial Grant, the Posey Foundation Grant and NY CITA Fellowship for Painting. She was selected as a winner of Expo 30, 2012 by Margot Norton, Associate Curator of the Whitney Museum.

Greenberg is the founder of Serve Here CT and the owner of ALVA Gallery, a contemporary art gallery in New London. She has served on many community boards, including the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, the Garde Arts Center, Inc., the Pequot Foundation and Read to Grow. She has also served on the Acquisitions Committee at the Florence Griswold Museum. She currently sits on the board of the Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut, and the Gund Art Gallery at Kenyon College.

On Female\Feminist/2017, Gladwell says this exhibitions gives "more air to an issue that is always there simmering." She hopes that the show will promote important conversations and concepts, and ultimately help chip away at issues that affect us all.

The exhibition is open and free to the public. The Chauncey Stillman Gallery is open Monday - Saturday, 10 am - 4 pm.

The panel discussion is free, open to the public and requires RSVP. For more information about Female\Feminist/2017 and upcoming programming related to this exhibition, visit: http://www.newhaven.edu/lyme.
