UNH Receives $2 million for Engineering Scholarships

An anonymous donor has given $2 million to the University of New Haven to establish an endowed scholarship fund for graduate students pursuing degrees in engineering.

December 10, 2014

It is the largest gift for scholarships in the university’s history.

The "2014 Engineering Graduate Student Scholarship Fund" will provide scholarships to students pursuing master’s degrees in computer science and in electrical, environmental, mechanical and industrial engineering, as well as in the engineering and operations management programs in the Tagliatela College of Engineering. Scholarships from the new fund could be awarded as soon as next fall.

"This magnificent gift will make a tremendous difference in the lives of many students," said President Steven H. Kaplan. "Since 1920, the University has been educating engineers, and our college of engineering is recognized as one of the best in the Northeast. Now, with the demand for engineers greater than ever, this gift will help us to continue our tradition of excellence and fund the training of highly skilled graduate engineers who will contribute to our society."

The graduate engineering program is very popular. Over the past six years, graduate enrollment in the Tagliatela College has tripled from 200 to 600 students.

"Students from across the region and around the world recognize the quality of our education," said Ronald S. Harichandran, dean of the Tagliatela College. "We have a very demanding curriculum that, combined with the real-world experiences that we provide, offers an unbeatable combination.

"Our faculty are also strongly engaged in research, and our graduate students work closely with them," he added. "This endowment will provide a significant boost to the research and scholarship pursued in the college."

"Students who complete our graduate program are ready to compete for jobs anywhere in the world, and this new scholarship fund will make our programs even more attractive to current and prospective students," Kaplan said.
