President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll Recognizes UNH for Service-Learning, Volunteering, Civic Engagement
The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the nation’s largest grant
maker for service and volunteering, has named the University of New Haven to the President’s
Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition that
colleges and universities can receive for community service, service-learning and
civic engagement.
December 09, 2014
The recognition is part of a strategic commitment on the part of the federal government
to engage millions of college students in service and highlight the critical role
of higher education in strengthening communities. CNCS, a federal agency, was established
in 1993.
UNH, a leader in experiential education, stresses community service along with internships
and other service. CNCS recognized UNH for its efforts to achieve meaningful outcomes
in the local community. UNH students participate annually in projects related to
literacy, hunger, homelessness, veterans’ affairs, public safety, refugee relocation
assistance and other outreach activities.
CNCS engages more than five million Americans in service through its core programs
-- Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and the Social Innovation Fund -- and leads President
Obama’s national call to service initiative, United We Serve.
As the nation’s largest grant maker for service and volunteering, CNCS plays a critical
role in strengthening America’s nonprofit sector and addressing our nation’s challenges
through exemplary community service programs and raise the visibility of effective
practices in campus community partnerships.
CNCS has administered the award since 2006 in collaboration with the U.S. Department
of Education and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as
the American Council on Education, Campus Compact, and the Interfaith Youth Core.
