The honorary degree recipient and commencement speaker will be the acclaimed illustrator and portrait artist Tim O’Brien, whose intricately detailed illustrations have been published most notably in TIME Magazine, as well as such publications as Rolling Stone, Newsweek, and Esquire. O’Brien has designed several US postage stamps and is also the illustrator of The Hunger Games trilogy.

The recipient of multiple awards and recognitions from many organizations including the Society of Illustrators in New York and Los Angeles, O’Brien has over a dozen paintings in the collection of the National Gallery, Washington D.C. and is the winner of the prestigious Hamilton King Award from the Society of Illustrators.  He is currently the Executive Vice-President of the Society of Illustrators in New York, as well as the Museum Chairman of the Society.  In addition he is a professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.

The Distinguished Service in Art Education Award is being given to Mill Street Loft in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.  This not-for-profit, community-based, multi-arts center is dedicated to bringing a wide range of creative, educational, and culturally-enriching programs to diverse audiences. Todd Poteet, founding director of Mill Street Loft, is accepting the award on behalf of the institution.

The Alumni Association speaker will be Yelizaveta Masalimova, a member of the Lyme Academy College Class of 2008.  Masalimova was the sole recipient in her class of the Adams Academic Four-Year Grant and has since received her M.F.A. from the University of Connecticut, where she received a full tuition waiver and a Graduate Teaching Assistantship.  Her work has been exhibited at Hartford ArtSpace and featured in Painting Recalculated: CTEmerge Exhibition. She is currently showing in the CT Artlist Pop-up Exhibitions around CT and will be competing in the National Sculpture Society’s Figure Modeling Competition at the New York Academy of Art, as well as teaching Continuing Education this summer at both Lyme Academy College and Silvermine School of Art in New Canaan, Conn.

There are 10 graduating members of the Class of 2013 all of whom will be receiving B.F.A. degrees.  The Class comprises four students majoring in Painting, three in Illustration, two in Sculpture and one in Drawing.

The Diana Atwood Johnson Leadership Award will be presented to Jeremy Horseman at the ceremony.  The Stephen and Lynne Wardlaw Awards for Excellence in Two- Dimensional work (Emma Kindall and Jeremy Horseman) and Three-Dimensional work (Lucian Goff) will also be announced at the ceremony.

A reception will be held at the College immediately after the ceremony to honor the graduates.  All are welcome to attend the reception.  This will also be a final opportunity to view the exceptional 2013 Senior Studio Exhibition.
