For more than 20 years, University of New Haven police chief Tracy Mooney ’08 M.S. has participated in the Law Enforcement Torch Run to support the Connecticut Special Olympics. When she arrived at the University two years ago, she found a department interested in joining her to show its support for what she calls a very important cause.
"As law enforcement officers we have a responsibility to not only our campus but also to our greater communities to actively participate in benevolent programs and to represent the University of New Haven in a positive manner," says Chief Mooney.
On Friday afternoon, Chief Mooney and more than a dozen colleagues and University community members joined the final leg of the run that brought the torch by the University of New Haven campus, into New Haven and onto the campus of Southern Connecticut State University, where the Connecticut Special Olympics held its 2018 Summer Games this weekend.
In total more than 1,500 active and retired law enforcement personnel participated in the three-day run across the state.
"My favorite part of the event is running alongside the athletes and seeing just pure joy on their faces. Participating in this event makes me proud to be a member of the law enforcement community."
