A Criminal Justice major, Leann Kleintop ‘19 is interning at Community Solutions in Bloomfield, Conn.

I chose Community Solutions Inc. because my passion lies in forensic psychology, which is ultimately using psychology to understand those who are part of our justice system and correctional programs. Community Solutions Inc. is a rehabilitation program that uses case management and group therapy sessions to aid those who have been incarcerated and attempts to aid them through the process of entering back into society.

This involves case management and group sessions to target the deeper problems in hopes that it may prevent them from offending again, as well as assisting with basic needs and job development so that they have the tools they need to be successful. I enjoy the individual sessions of working with those that have been incarcerated because I believe as though it is a crucial step in rehabilitation.

Some of the men and women that are a part of the system have never been listened to and no one has ever tried to understand them. This being said, a case management session could be the first time that they have ever opened up to anyone and can be a critical step in solving any underlying reasons of why they offended in the first place.

Overall, I hope this internship allows me to see the daily duties of a case manager because this is the career I wish to pursue after earning my bachelor’s degree. I intend to experience the pros and cons of working in a nonprofit along with the experience of working with individuals who have been incarcerated.

This whole experience will allow me to understand if this is something I truly wish to pursue and if this is the right career path for me. Leann Kleintop ‘19

My expectations are to obtain a well-rounded idea of this position and to come out better understanding textbook knowledge as I see it portrayed in the real word. I expect that my classes thus far will be helpful in my daily assignments, and that overall this internship will be an amazing experience that goes far beyond the summer.
