Law Firm Internship Fosters Creativity

Throughout this field, critical thinking is the most valuable task. As I’ve said in past posts, it is an attorney’s job to think on their feet. Through my internship, I am responsible for gathering and analyzing information for cases.

Critical thinking promotes creativity. A person must come up with creative solutions and new ideas. Part of my internship requires me to think outside of the box. I think of new theories and arguments daily.

Two other important factors of critical thinking are interpretation and evaluation. My job allows me to interpret the law and see new sides and reasoning. I evaluate arguments and facts of the case. This is extremely important within this field. Critical thinking is so important when dealing with new information, tasks, etc. It is important to be able to deal with whatever issue comes your way and to find solutions.

In this field, you need to put your bias aside and think of all sides of an argument. In order to best represent your client, you need to do your research and come to a fair decision. I do believe that I have the capability to put aside bias and make critical decisions. It is my job to give my client the solution that works the best for them – not me.

I may not always agree with whatever decision is made, however I know it is my obligation to come to a sensible decision. I am experiencing this in my internship every day. It is easy for me to put aside my bias because I know that it is my job.

The Bergami Summer Internship Program is funded through the generosity of Board of Governors member – and former Board Chair – Sam Bergami ’85 EMBA and his wife, Lois, and the Division of Student Affairs. The students are blogging about the experience throughout the summer.
