As a student-athlete, I am very familiar with what it is like to work within a team environment. Throughout my life I have come to believe that to be a team player means to work with others to achieve a goal, regardless of what is best for each person as an individual.
One of the most challenging parts of being on a team, I believe, is putting aside what might be personally best for you, in order to achieve what is best for the team as a whole. An example of how I am a team player within Central Connecticut’s athletic department was exhibited this past week. My supervisor gave me a task of organizing dozens and dozens of documents into one master spreadsheet. The purpose of organizing them was so that then she could use the master spreadsheet to have the information more readily available, allowing her to help the rest of the athletic department. Although organizing all of the paperwork seemed somewhat monotonous, by doing it I knew that I was benefiting my supervisor as well as the athletic department as a whole.
I would define a "good follower" as someone who is able to take direction well. In order for a team to be successful, there needs to be good followers as well as good leaders. Looking back to my most recent softball season I played the role of a follower. I listened to those above me and did what I needed to do in order for our team to be successful. I believe that in order for me to have been a better teammate I could have spoken up more and tried to fill more of a leadership role than I did.
In terms of my internship at Central, I believe that I do need to take more initiative and continue to be a good follower but also voice my opinion as well.
I am lucky that the environment that I am placed in allows for such positive type growth. Maddy Derosia ’19, Sport Management
