GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP PROGRAM
There are two basic types of assistantships: research/teaching assistants and administrative assistants. In addition, the resident director live-in positions have special requirements (see those positions for details).
General Information
Eligibility for assistantship positions is limited to graduate students who will be officially accepted in a degree program and who will be registered as full-time students in the Fall 2008 term. Full-time study is defined as enrollment in a minimum of nine credits per trimester. In certain circumstances, the Graduate School may approve a reduction in credits. Funding for students who receive tuition support from an external organization or government will be prorated based on the type of assistantship and the amount of external support received.
A student may hold only one assistantship during any award period. During the period that an assistantship is in effect, the student holding the position must be registered as a full-time student and must maintain a 3.0 cumulative quality point ratio. Students who fail to comply with these requirements will be subject to dismissal from the position.
Graduate assistantship appointments are made for the academic year 2008–2009. Acceptance of these appointments is considered to be a commitment until June 30, 2009, unless a student completes the coursework for her or his degree in a prior term. Students may not end one assistantship and begin another during the academic year. Graduate assistants may work up to 20 hours per week, but should not work more than a total of 200 hours in any single trimester. It should be noted that graduate assistants who are here for the full academic year (three trimesters) will be awarded a maximum of 600 hours to work. Students who are here for two terms have a maximum of 400 hours to work, and students here for only one term have a maximum of 200 hours to work. Graduate assistants will receive compensation of $7.65 per hour of work and a 50 percent tuition reduction grant for up to twelve credit hours for each graduate trimester. Graduate assistants will receive only the tuition reduction grant for those classes that are required for their degree program. In addition, students applying for administrative assistantships must be eligible for Federal Work Study; therefore, international students may not apply for or be awarded administrative assistant positions. The only two exceptions to this rule are for the International Admissions Office and International Student Services office. Continuation of appointment in each succeeding term is dependent upon satisfactory work in the previous term.
Applying For Graduate Assistantships
If application is being made for more than one assistantship, a separate application must be submitted for each position and a resume may be submitted. Application materials must be submitted directly to the supervisor(s) of the desired position(s). Applicant appointment decisions will be made by the supervisors who will submit the name(s) of their selected assistant(s) for research and teaching positions to the Financial Aid Office. Persons selected to fill the research and teaching positions will be notified of their appointments by letter. Students selected for these positions should discuss their work schedules with their prospective supervisors. Selection for assistantship positions is highly competitive so students should consider applying for more than one position and should submit application materials as early as possible.
Financial Aid Information Required to Begin Work
All students selected for graduate assistantships must submit the following forms and information to the UNH Financial Aid Office before they will be allowed to begin working. No graduate assistant will be allowed to work until all required documentation is submitted. Any student who begins work prior to completing all required paperwork will not be paid. The forms listed below may be obtained from the UNH Financial Aid Office.
U.S. citizens and permanent residents are required to submit these two forms:
2008–2009 University of New Haven Graduate Financial Aid Application
2008–2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
International Students are required to submit the 2008–2009 Application for Non-Need Based Financial Aid.
Upon submission of the information indicated above, graduate assistants will receive a financial aid award letter and graduate assistantship appointment letter.
The appointment letter will list the position for which you have been accepted, your supervisor's name, the dates of employment, and the date that the Work Authorization paperwork will be ready for pick-up. Included with the Work Authorization paperwork are the Federal W-4, CT W-4 Form, INS Employment Eligibility Verification Form (I-9), and additional employment paperwork.
Following submission of these completed documents to the Financial Aid Office, the student will be issued a Work Release Card. No student can begin work until the Work Release Card has been issued by the Financial Aid Office.
