Overview of the Resident Assistant Application Process

The application process begins end of October and concludes with position offerings before Thanksgiving Break some positions will be an immediate start date. The application process consists of a mandatory RA information session, paper application, resume, and two letters of reference for all applicants. Only candidates who meet the requirements of the position and have submitted a completed application will be reviewed. Please be sure to closely follow the timeline for submission of all applications materials. Late or incomplete applications will automatically disqualify your candidacy for this position.

After reviewing the candidates’ file (online application, references and resume), candidates will be notified via e-mail regarding their status in the selection process. Applicants that are chosen to move forward after this initial review step will be invited to participate in an individual, in-person interview.

Candidates selected for individual interviews will need to come into the Office of Residential Life in Bixler Hall on Monday, November 18th to schedule an individual interview. The interview times will be decided on a first-come first-served basis. Interviews will take place Tuesday to Thursday, November 19th to 21th.

After the individual interviews, candidate applications will be reviewed one final time and offer letters notifying each applicant of their status as Resident Assistant candidate will be sent out via e-mail by Monday, November 25th, 2013. 

Please remember that the position of Resident Assistant holds a tremendous amount of responsibility. All facets of the interview process will be evaluated for your employability and suitability for this position.

Online Application – The online application is for students who are interested in being a Resident Assistant for the Spring 2014 semester some positions will be an immediate start date. The application asks you to provide general information about yourself and your experience in leadership positions. It also consists of 5 short answer essay questions that will help us understand your commitment to this position and the qualities you would bring to an RA staff.

To access the Living Learning Community (LLC) Applications, please click here to download.  Please submit this form to the Office of Residential Life in Bixler Hall if you are interested in a RA position in a LLC.  The current LLC positions are for the Health and Wellness LLC and Criminal Justice - Law and Investigation LLC.

Online Application Notes:

  1. Submitting your Application – Make sure that you complete all parts of the online application before submission. Your application will not be complete until you click the submit button at the bottom of the page. 
  2. Session Timeouts – If you leave your application idle too long, it may timeout. Any information you have entered may be lost.  Please note that the application only allows for 4,000 characters which includes spacing.  It is recommended that you compose your answers in a separate word processing program and paste them into the application when you're ready to submit.
  3. Problems – If you are having any issues with the online application, please contact the Office of Residential Life.

Letters of Recommendation – A complete application must include two letters of recommendations. Please distribute the following recommendation form to your references and have them submit that form with their letter. You should read and complete the top portion of the form prior to distribution. If you do not complete the top portion of the reference, it will be considered incomplete. Please note that one of your references should be a UNH-affiliated faculty or staff member. The other reference should be someone who knows you in a supervisory or advisory role. Parents and close family members may NOT serve as references for this application.

All letters of recommendation and forms must be returned to the Office of Residential Life by Tuesday, November 12th by 4 PM. If your letters of recommendation are not received by this deadline, your application will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed.

Resume - You will need to provide a paper copy of your current resume with your application. Your resume should include at least your last two employers (if applicable) and what kind of work you have done in the past. Please also list any community service, volunteering, student involvement or special achievements you have received. If you need help writing a resume, visit the Career Development Office or their website for more information. All resume must be returned to the Office of Residential Life by Tuesday, November 12th by 4 PM.
