National American Indian Heritage Month:
The term 'American Indian' incorporates hundreds of different tribes and approximately 250 languages.  Starting in 1976 as Native American Awareness Week, the period was expanded by Congress and approved by President Bush in August 1990 by designating the month of November as National American Indian Heritage Month.

November 1, 1848:
The first medical school for women opened in Boston. The Boston Female Medical School was founded by Samuel Gregory with just twelve students. In 1874, the school merged with the Boston University School of Medicine, becoming one of the first co-ed medical schools.

November 1, 1995:
The first all-race local government elections took place in South Africa, marking the end of the apartheid system.

November 4, 2008:
Barack Obama
became the first African-American and first bi-racial President of the United States.

November 12, 1815:
American suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton was born in Johnstown, NY.

November 12, 1985:
Xavier Suarez
was elected Miami's first Cuban-American mayor.

November 13, 1856:
Birthdate of Louis D. Brandeis, Jewish-American lawyer and jurist
During his service as a United States Supreme Court justice from 1916 to 1939, Brandeis became known for his vigorous defense of civil liberties.
