September 15 - October 15:
National Hispanic Heritage Month

Starting in 1968 as National Hispanic Heritage Week and incorporating September 15 and 16, the independence days for Central American nations and Mexico, respectively, the period was expanded in 1988 to National Hispanic Heritage Month.

September 19, 1893:
New Zealand became the first country to grant women the right to vote. 

September 20, 1973:
The much-hyped "Battle of the Sexes" took place in the Houston Astrodome as tennis player and women's rights activist, Billie Jean King, defeated self-styled male chauvinist Bobby Riggs in three straight sets.  Riggs, a retired tennis chamption, had been critical of the quality of women's tennis.
