The Latin American Student Association, also referred to as LASA, is an organization at the University of New Haven, dedicated to increasing awareness of the Hispanic culture. National Society of Black Engineers Weekly Meeting
The National Society of Black Engineers mission is "to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers, who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community". National Disability Employment Awareness Month
By presidential proclamation in 1988, October has been designated to enhance public awareness of those with disabilities and encourage their full integration into the work force.
GLBT (Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender) History Month
In the 1990's, teachers and community organizations determined that a month should be designated for GLBT history. They chose October because public schools are in session and traditions, such as National Coming Out Day, occur then.
October 2, 1967:
Thurgood Marshall (1908-1993) was sworn in on this date as the first AFrican-American Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. He served until 1991 and was known for opposing discrimination and the death penalty, and for championing free speech and civil liberties.
October 11, 1884:
Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) was born in New York City. She was the wife of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States. As First Lady, she led an unprecedented, independent life, striving to improve the lives of people all over the world. In 1933, she became the first wife of a President to give her own news conference in the White House. Roosevelt was the only First Lady to receive honorary membership into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the world's first and eldest sorority for African American women.
October 16, 1859:
John Brown's raid at Harper's Ferry
A passionate foe of slavery, Brown led a band of 21 men in an attack on a federal armory at Harper's Ferry. West Virginia, on this date. After seizing the armory and the bridges leading to it, he was forced to surrender, tried for treason, and hanged. Brown, a White man, was hailed by abolitionists as a martyr.
