Coming off its second-straight Northeast-10 Conference championship and the first NCAA Division II playoff appearance since 1997, the University of New Haven football team has prepared throughout the spring for another exciting season this fall.

The Chargers are coming off a remarkable 11-2 season in which they won the conference championship with a perfect 8-0 record and finished the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record against NCAA Division II opponents. The 2011 season was highlighted by seven home victories, including a thrilling 44-37 victory over Kutztown University in the NCAA second round in front of a sold-out crowd at Ralph F. DellaCamera stadium. Ranked as high as no. 5 in the coaches’ poll, UNH concluded the season ranked no. 8 in all of Division II.

New Haven started preparations for the 2012 season this spring with its annual spring practices and spring game. The squad featured over 60 student-athletes from the 2010 and 2011 NE-10 Championship teams and over 15 returning starters, including five returning All-Americans. The exciting inter-squad spring game ended with the white team coming from behind in the final minute for a 7-6 victory, but both sides showed signs of improvement and showcased a few of the things to look for this fall.

The fall sports will all officially kickoff with the return of the football team for training camp on Wednesday, august 8th. After three and a half weeks of training, the Chargers will open the 2012 season at home on Saturday, September 1st when Merrimack College travels to DellaCamera stadium. Three other scheduled home games include a clash with Saint Anselm College on Saturday, September 22nd, a conference battle with assumption College on Saturday, October 6th and a homecoming match-up with cross-town rival Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday, October 27th. Should the team qualify, the Northeast-10 Conference Championship weekend will take place on Saturday, November 10th at the site of the highest seed.
