80% of Our Students Take Advantage of Financial Aid
All accepted full time students, regardless of need, are considered for Academic Based Scholarships, which are awarded at the time of acceptance to the University. For 2013-14 these awards range from $1,000 to $20,000.
In addition to Academic Scholarships, students may apply for need-based aid in the form of Employment, Grants and Loans. The financial need of each student is used to determine aid eligibility. Need is calculated by subtracting the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), as determined by a federally mandated formula using the financial information supplied on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), from the Cost of Attendance (COA). Based on the student's need, the Financial Aid Office will produce an aid package that may include a combination of grants, loans, and employment. Incoming students are notified of their aid eligibility through a financial aid award letter which is sent to their home. This correspondence details the funds and amounts that the student has been awarded.
Funds are credited to the student's Bursar account in equal disbursements depending on the term schedule listed on the award. Funds cannot be credited to a student's account at the Bursar's Office without an accepted award acknowledgement. Loan applications will not be processed and forwarded to the lender without the accepted award. Furthermore, all the necessary paperwork for disbursement must be completed and submitted. This includes an accepted award and, in the case of loans, a signed promissory note and the completion of the required entrance counseling.
New students begin receiving award letters in late February upon completion of the FAFSA and acceptance into the university. In the mean time, our UNH net price calculator can provide you with an estimated package.
Returning students will be sent an email in early June alerting them that their financial aid award is ready. Students should log into the online UNH financial aid system to view and accept their financial aid award.
Student's interested in applying for financial aid are encouraged to do so as early as possible to ensure full consideration for available funds.
As always, our Financial Aid Office is here to assist you in making the right choices in financing the valuable investment of higher education.
