USGA Sustainability Committee

The USGA Sustainability Committee was created in Fall 2012 as an organization dedicated to increasing environmental awareness and stewardship among University of New Haven members. Our committee is collaborating with school leadership, the student body, and surrounding communities to transition the University of New Haven into a truly “green” place to live, work, and learn. We hope to inspire many students, staff, and faculty to become involved in making a positive impact on this and many other crucial issues.

The Spring 2013 semester was the committee’s first full semester of operation. During this semester we began ongoing projects including the UNH Recycling Petition Drive, Committee Campus Cleanups, and Earth Week Environmental Awareness Info Tables and Giveaways. We successfully planned and ran a number of large events for students including a Hiking Adventure at Sleeping Giant State Park, Bill Duesing Sustainable Food Presentation, Seth Leitman “Green Living Guy” Green Living Presentation, Disney’s “Oceans” Outdoor Movie in the Quad, The 11th Hour Outdoor Movie in the Quad, and the UNH Kayaking Adventure Trip in Upstate NY.

The current committee leadership consists of Sophomores Joshua Howard (Co-Chair) and Patricia Oprea (Co-Chair).  Our committee faculty advisor is Dr. “Jon” Can B. Aktas, Assistant Professor of Civil, Mechanical, and Environmental Engineering, and Sustainability Studies Program Coordinator.  With the help of our outstanding committee members, we plan to continue our efforts from last semester and achieve even greater successes in the area of sustainability.
