The exhibition title Loss Generation is a play on the technical phrase “generation loss” and the historical term “Lost Generation.” The artworks in this group show explore the motivations behind reproducing an experience, phenomena, or cultural by-product, and the distortions that occur in that reproduction. Adherence to the original subject matter is often compromised by the faulty and subjective act of remembering, similar to the generation loss that accumulates between copies of mix tapes or resized digital images. Transformation, and possibly degradation, occurs through the production of something new from something familiar, resulting in a feeling of disillusionment that ties the works in this exhibition to the various generations that have been described as “lost” since WWI.
Christina Vassallo is an independent curator based in Brooklyn. She founded Random Number, a curatorial platform that specializes in promoting emerging artists, in 2007, but she made her curatorial debut in 2003 with a series of weekend-long exhibitions in a Queens apartment. Since then she has organized projects for a variety of non-profit and for-profit venues. Her most recent projects include a 40-person exhibition in the abandoned St. Cecilia’s convent (system:system), a miniature golf course inspired by US immigration policy for Jersey City Museum (The Golden Door), a program of digital artworks projected onto the Manhattan Bridge through NYC DOT (Bright Nights), and a traveling show about macabre tendencies in contemporary Norwegian art at chashama and Lafayette College (DARKNESS DESCENDS: Norwegian Art Now).
Vassallo’s projects have been reviewed in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Star Ledger, Flavorpill, Hyperallergic and Art Fag City, and featured on WPIX news, NY1, and NJN News. In addition to her Random Number projects, she is currently the Adjunct Curator at Flux Factory. Vassallo previously served as Associate Director of Kinz, Tillou + Feigen gallery and ART&IDEA gallery, as well as Assistant Curator at American Federation of Arts. She holds a B.A. in art history from New York University and an M.A. in visual arts management from NYU.
