Eva Sapi, member of UNH's biology and environmental science faculty discusses a potential explanation as to why Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, evades detection and, in her view, outwits treatment. In 2012 she and her colleagues found that Borrelia occasionally assembles into solidified, protective groups (called biofilms) that can make an infection chronic and very difficult to treat.
