PHT301BCN PHOTOGRAPHY IN BARCELONA

Learning how the camera can be used in a foreign environment is an exciting tool of documentary record, cross-cultural understanding, artistic expression and self-discovery. After an introduction to the fundamentals of photography, both traditional and digital, your camera will be constantly trained on the city of Barcelona itself, its architecture, history, people, and rich culture. As you develop your technical, compositional and critical skills as a photographer you will create a portfolio of images that will both showcase and celebrate your unforgettable study abroad experience. PHT302 PHOTOGRAPHY AND FILM DEVELOPMENT IN PARIS

This course explores the urban and cultural landscape of Paris through the medium of photography while teaching basic darkroom skills in SLR film development. You acquire basic and critical photographic skills in the following areas: mechanics of camera types, black-&-white film, the camera lens & shutter, film exposure, darkroom developing & printing, and the physics of lighting & optics. Straight photography, with an emphasis on self expression and the development of a personal vision, will serve as the basis for much of your work. PHT330 URBAN SOCIAL PHOTOGRAPHY

This course explores the many ways the camera is used, both past and present, as a tool of social critique and political commentary. In the urban setting of Paris, you develop photographic skills and a journalistic eye for the purpose of increasing popular awareness of current social issues in France such as homelessness, immigration, poverty, injustice, and violence. PHT331 HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Structured to take advantage of the photographic heritage of the city of Paris, this course introduces the historical record of this visual art and surveys the main chronological periods, thematic categories, and modernist and post-modernist theoretical approaches pertinent to this genre. Considerable study is conducted in museums, Left Bank galleries, and photographic archives. Credits: 3
