College of Business launches pilot program for high-achieving students
Mary J. Miller, lecturer in accounting and director of Undergraduate Experience in the UNH College of Business, explains why the University has created a new fast-track, three-year study option, which offers academically strong students the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in business by completing 121 credit hours in only three years, saving a year's tuition, room and board. The fast-track study option is available for all of the majors in the College of Business, which includes accounting, finance, management, marketing, management of sports industries, hospitality and restaurant management, and tourism and event management.

He explains how events of the 1960s and 1970s redefined the treatment of scholar-athletes and his current motivation for revising the context in which colleges perceive their athletes.

UNH professor Mike Lawlor provides insight on how the Petit murders might have been avoided had the Connecticut Parole Board received adequate information about the suspects. "There was information that the Parole Board and the Department of Corrections should have had that would have changed the decision making here. This is a classic case of the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing," he says, noting that a state-of-the-art information system has been implemented since then.

A team of UNH engineering students unveiled a prototype vehicle designed to compete at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers supermileage competition in June, 2010. Computer, electrical and mechanical engineering skills came together to create the 120-lb vehicle designed to travel over 500 miles on a gallon of gas.

Dr. Henry Lee Receives Honorary Degree
Nearly 900 undergraduate and graduate students accepted their degrees on May 16, among them a unique trio from the same family: Nikkia, Lorrice and Tyrone Grant of Hamden, Connecticut. "I can't believe this day is finally here," said Lorrice Grant. "We've all worked so hard, we've helped each other out, bonded together…and now all three of us are graduating. We're just overjoyed." Dr. Henry Lee, the founder of the forensic science program at UNH, was the keynote speaker at the day's commencement ceremonies. He also received an honorary Doctorate of Law degree.

Three members of the Grant family of Hamden, Connecticut will be in cap and gown for UNH's 87th Commencement on May 16. While father Tyrone and mom Lorrice will be receiving degrees in, respectively, business administration and nutrition/dietetics, daughter Nikkia will receive her master's degree in public administration. From difficult schedules to graveyard shifts, Nikkia says making this happen has been a family affair.

Professor's Work Featured on "All Things Connecticut"
UNH professor Carmela Cuomo has spent the past decade studying the horseshoe crab, the blood of which contains a compound which is used by every drug manufacturer in the world to test for the presence of bacteria in medicines and vaccines. The latest tests on horseshoe crab blood may show that it also has anti-cancer and anti-AIDS properties. Cuomo and two of her students were featured in a segment of CPTV's "All Things Connecticut" which highlights their important work in breeding, and ultimately saving, this important species.

Mike Lawlor, professor of criminal justice, state representative and former prosecutor, comments on Raymond Clark III's defense strategy in the Annie Le murder case. "It's a potential death penalty case...when you get into that situation, the defense lawyers and prosecutors become much more cautious," says Professor Lawlor. "...[but] in a case as serious as this, I can't imagine that the prosecutors would be looking for anything less than the equivalent of a life sentence here."

The Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science will revolutionize the way crimes are solved, with features like forensic-crisis management and cold-case resolution. The new Institute will also "bring law enforcement training and forensic research to another plateau," according to Dr. Lee. The building's technology will also be used by law enforcement officials around the state.
