Transformation - 2004 to present

Record-Shattering Enrollment: According to the College Board, increasing an incoming class 100 percent in one year is extremely rare. At the University of New Haven, it's business as usual. UNH has experienced an "off-the-charts" spike in enrollment for fall 2008. By the crucial national "deadline" of May 1, deposits were up 104 percent over last year, following a dizzying number of applications.

Suite-Style Residence Hall Under Construction: UNH has broken ground for a new $46 million, five-story, 400-bed residence hall which will offer views of the Long Island Sound. The facility will include single rooms within a suite equipped with a full kitchen, and is slated for September 2009 occupancy.

Accepted into Northeast-10 Athletic Conference: Football to Return: the University of New Haven accepted an invitation to join the Northeast-10 Conference. Membership enhances the University's athletic potential, raises its academic profile, and marks UNH as a university that is aggressively moving forward. UNH will begin competing in the Northeast-10 in fall 2008 in all sports except football, which will begin competing in 2009.

Innovative Articulation Agreements: UNH has signed articulation agreements with Gateway Community College and Housatonic Community College, allowing for smoother transition to the University's four-year programs and grants for academically strong students.

Competing Like the Pros: In addition to University's new $1.3 million Kayo Field, the new Ralph F. DellaCamera, Jr., Stadium on North Campus will offer a state-of-the-art playing field-on its blue and yellow synthetic-turf field -when the newly restored football team storms out for its first practices this autumn, thanks to UNH alumnus Ralph F. DellaCamera, Jr. '75. Construction will begin June 1 and is scheduled for completion Aug. 1. The football field also will be used to host NCAA and Northeast-10 Conference championship games in football, men's and women's soccer and women's lacrosse.

New Recreation Center on Campus: The new $15.5 million David A. Beckerman Recreation Center features state-of-the-art exercise equipment, an illuminated glass-enclosed running track, and a gymnasium with courts for sports including basketball, rollerblading, roller hockey, volleyball and indoor soccer. The fitness center includes a multi-purpose room for a variety of activities including yoga, step aerobics and Pilates, and racquetball courts, lounges and changing rooms and a juice bar.

Meeting Adult Student and Corporate Needs: UNH established the University College for adult learners to provide programs and courses that focus on academic excellence, convenience, and flexibility. In addition, the College offers customized corporate training to area and regional businesses.

Groundbreaking Faculty Research: NASA and PBS/NOVA are just of few of the impressive agencies and organizations that call on UNH faculty to develop new technologies and solve mysteries.

A Leader in Experiential Learning: The University is the Northeast Center for the National Society of Experiential Education (NSEE). Students at UNH put classroom learning to work in exciting real-world settings.

Meeting the Need for Engineers Beginning in Middle School: The first class of the Science and Engineering University Magnet School-- offering enhanced math and science skills to grades 6-12-begins in fall 2008 with the sixth grade.

Expanding Liberal Arts Connections: The University houses the New Haven Symphony Orchestra as part of a partnership that includes a new on-campus concert series and classes taught by NHSO Music Director William Boughton.

Management Skills to Go: UNH's Hazell Nut Café gives students hands-on experience running a business. The Café is named for University alum Jeffery Hazell '83, who established The Hazell Center for Hospitality Sales and Event Management in 2006.

A Renaissance in Global Security: The Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences now offers a concentration in International Justice and Security, which combines Fire Science classes with International Criminal Justice courses and social science studies.

Award-Winning Theatre Program: The burgeoning UNH Theatre Program continues to garner awards and nominations from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for its students, performances and set design.

Honoring America's Top Forensic Scientist: The University has named The Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences, and, a new building is planned to house the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science.

State-of-the-Art Technology: The Samuel S. Bergami, Jr., Learning Center for Finance and Technology simulates a Wall Street trading-room floor and a student-managed portfolio allows UNH business students to actually buy and sell different investments on the stock exchange. 85 percent of the University's classrooms are now equipped with Smart Classroom technology, at a cost of approximately $50,000 per classroom. The technology includes custom-built workstations equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. Three-dimensional images can be projected in minute detail on an in-classroom screen. And, note-taking reaches a new level. Classroom discussions are uploaded to the Blackboard Online Learning Portal for students to view, print and study at a later date via the Internet.

Feasibility of Law School Under Review: The University is embarking on a feasibility study to create a law school. This effort would join with a number of other initiatives UNH is aggressively pursuing in its effort to become one of the strongest comprehensive universities in the Northeast.

New Major on Global Connections: Ever-increasing globalization calls for students to recognize the connections and trends between nations and their people. Case studies, language proficiency and international internships equal a well-rounded graduate.

Corporate Partners in Engineering: The Tagliatela College of Engineering is now offering a B.S. in System Engineering and has established a Corporate Partner Program to create closer ties between the University and industry.

Academics and Student Life Go Hand in Hand:  UNH's new F.A.S.T. program (Faculty and Students Together) has faculty interacting with students outside the classroom. And, with the University's Business Living Learning Community program, Business students live together, interact frequently with Business faculty and staff, and enjoy guest lecturers, off-campus trips and special advising.

Technology and Science Education Enhancements:  The Engineer-in-Residence Program at the Tagliatela College of Engineering supports a professional engineer on campus; a Bachelor of Science in System Engineering major is created; the Engineering and Science Summer Institute for Young Women attracts students from throughout the country.

A Top Study-Abroad Program: Partnerships have catapulted UNH to become one of the largest study-abroad providers in the nation. The University has agreements with CEA Cultural Experiences Abroad and The Center for International Studies (CIS).
