Kaplan Lauded for "Focus and Clarity of Purpose" in Transforming Campus
West Haven, Conn., Feb. 4, 2008 - University of New Haven President Steven Kaplan has been named the New Haven Businessperson of the Year by Business New Haven. Kaplan has been profiled in the Feb. 4 issue which features an in-depth interview and cover photos. Kaplan and other area business leaders will be honored at an awards dinner at the New Haven Lawn Club on March 5.

Samuel S. Bergami, Jr. '85 E.M.B.A. chair of the University of New Haven Board of Governors notes that Kaplan was selected as Businessperson of the Year for good reason, citing Kaplan's leadership and "the many important and positive changes the business community has observed at the University of New Haven that demonstrate a renewed vigor and sense of the University's future." Bergami points to the impressive new campus plan, several construction projects, top-notch academic leadership appointments, a law school feasibility study, and the resurgence of football as just a few of the initiatives that helped Kaplan earn the honor.
The recently opened David A. Beckerman Recreation Center features state-of-the-art exercise equipment, a gymnasium with courts for sports including rollerblading, roller hockey, volleyball, basketball and indoor soccer, and an illuminated glass-enclosed running track. The fitness center includes a multi-purpose room for a variety of activities including yoga, step aerobics and Pilates, racquetball courts, lounges, locker rooms and a juice bar.
Other new buildings slated for development include a new 120,000 sq. ft., 400-bed student housing complex-to begin construction in May 2008-and The Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science, with a public museum and learning center, classrooms, laboratories and offices. Also on the drawing board is the Science and Engineering University Magnet School for grades 6-12.
