West Haven, Conn., January 30, 2008 - Dr. Mario Gaboury, professor and chair of the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of New Haven (UNH), has been appointed to the State of Connecticut Victim Advocate Advisory Committee by State Senate Minority Leader John McKinney. Gaboury was selected as a representative of the educational community due to his expertise in victimology. The duties of the Victim Advocacy Committee are to review patterns of treatment and service for victims; to consider policy implications and propose policy changes necessary for systemic improvements, and to annually evaluate of the effectiveness of the Office of the Victim Advocate Gaboury serves as chair of the UNH Department of Criminal Justice and directs the University's Crime Victim Study Center. He has been involved in securing victims' rights and providing victim services for 30 years. He is president of the American Society of Victimology, serves on the executive committee of the Joint Center on Violence and Victim Studies, and is an active member of the World Society of Victimology. He is the former deputy director of the Office for Victims of Crime of the U.S. Department of Justice, and he is currently chairing the Office for Victims of Crime, U.S. Department of Justice, Working Group, developing the new National Victim Assistance Academy curriculum. He was appointed to the Connecticut Trafficking in Persons Council in October of 2007.
Gaboury earned a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University, a M.A. from the University of Maryland, and a B.A. from the University of Connecticut.
