Cicada Chamber Players to Hold Benefit Concert for UNH Lyme Disease Research

What:            

The University of New Haven (UNH) College of Arts and Sciences Department of Biology and Environmental Sciences will host a benefit concert with The Cicada Chamber Players, featuring New York Philharmonic bassist William Blossom.

Blossom is the founder of The Cicada Chamber Players, a New York-based, non-profit group of professional musicians dedicated to generating interest in chamber music while raising funds for important social causes and local charities.  Blossom will be joined by Heidi Upton, piano; Hannah Elisabeth Ross, viola; Wendy Stern, flute and Shelby Yamin, violin.  The Cicada Chamber Players are collaborating with UNH to offer a program of works by Haydn, Ibert, Handel/Halvorsen, Schickele, Dittersdorf and Mooney, with proceeds benefiting the Lyme Disease Research Group at the University of New Haven headed by Eva Sapi, Ph.D.

Tickets may be purchased online at http://cicadaarts.org/concerts.htm or at the door.  Ticket prices are $25 for adults, $15 for students and seniors.  A special "day-of" discounted rate of $15 for UNH faculty and staff, and $5 for UNH students will be available at the door, subject to availability (UNH I.D. required).

Details:          

Blossom joined the New York Philharmonic in 1975, having been a member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Milwaukee Symphony.  He performs with the New York Philharmonic Ensembles in the New York area and has made regular guest appearances with the Arcady Music Festival in Bar Harbor, Maine since 1985.  Since 1995, he has been on the board of directors of the Rockland Conservatory of Music.  He teaches privately and has coached the bass sections of the All-City High School Orchestra and the Independent Schools Symphony Orchestra.

Sapi is an associate professor of biology and environmental science at the University of New Haven where she combines teaching with research, leading graduate students in developing a higher level of understanding of Lyme disease.  In her research, Sapi investigates the presence of different formations (spirochete, cyst and biofilm) of Borrelia burgdorferi, the Lyme disease bacteria. She also studies the resistance of these different forms to antibiotics and natural agents.
