Featured Initiatives
Connected Core

This semester, we are launching a project to examine our University Core Curriculum and brainstorm ways to make it a more distinctive experience for University of New Haven students. This initiative, conceived as a part of the University's "A Bold Path Forward: 2026 Strategic Plan," asks that we "revise the Core Curriculum to streamline and distinguish a coherent core that prepares all students for success in the new economy with emerging technologies."

The Office of the Provost is convening a Core Curriculum Innovation Committee, charged with reviewing the core curriculum course enrollment and assessment data and then developing a proposal for how to renovate our core curriculum to become a more distinctive and signature element of our undergraduate experience.

College of Arts & Sciences faculty Mary Isbell and Lauren Boasso (English) will play key roles on the committee, serving as co-facilitators. Both have been working with an interdisciplinary team of faculty since 2020 to design and pilot a Connected Core, inspired by a program at Purdue University. The committee also includes Houssein El Turkey (mathematics) and representatives from the University's other academic colleges and schools.

Spotlight On Our Faculty
Sharon Kahara
Making An Impact, In the Classroom and on the Environment

Sharon Kahara, Ph.D., a tenure-track assistant professor in Biology & Environmental Science, spent part of the summer studying Wildlife, Ecology and Conservation in Kenya. Sharon is also working with the town of Branford to set up a long-term monitoring station for saltmarsh ecology projects. Dr. Kahara is in her second year with the University and is already making an impact in her teaching, research, and service.

Christopher Dowd
Every Game Needs a Good Story

Chris Dowd, Ph.D., professor and chair of English, has designed several new classes focused on game design and storytelling methods in games. Students not only study a variety of analog and digital games in these classes, but they use basic game engines to create their own video games. They also use the fabrication resources of the new Makerspace to prototype tabletop games. Three of Dr. Dowd's students from the Spring 2022 semester went on to win best overall game at the University's first summer Game Jam game design event.

Bradley Woodworth
Helping the Public Make Sense of History... as it's Unfolding

Bradley Woodworth, Ph.D., associate professor of history, focused efforts on public media after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began on February 24. From mid-March through July he published four op-ed articles in the Hartford Courant, one in The Hill, and one in LRT News (Lithuanian state media news service), which appeared in both English and Lithuanian. On the radio, he has appeared every other Monday on a Connecticut talk-radio station (WICC 600 AM), where he has discussed issues related to Russia, Ukraine, and Russia’s invasion. He has also appeared on CNA (Channel NewsAsia), Newsy, and Ticker News.

A Small Sampling of Dr. Woodworth, In the Media:

Zachary Goldberg
The Sound of Success

Lecturer Zachary Goldberg is consistently seeking new opportunities for students in music and sound recording and using these opportunities to serve students’ long-term success. He continues to refine our music and sound recording curriculum to keep pace with changing demands but keeps everything grounded with faithfulness to class outcomes. Last year, he oversaw all senior capstone projects in the program, which included a broad range of exciting work (such as updating the Bucknall Theater sound system and analyzing the acoustics of the Dodds Hall “Concrete Lobby”).
