Developing Your Isolation Plan

This information was last updated July 25, 2023.

Our paramount concern is always to protect the health and wellbeing of our community and all our students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Any individual who contracts a communicable disease requiring isolation should not come to campus. This page outlines steps that all students should take to be prepared in case they contract a communicable disease requiring self-isolation.

The University of New Haven follows best practices as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC recommends isolation for those who test positive for COVID-19 or Monkeypox. However, the public health landscape can change quickly. In an ever-changing world, it's best to be prepared for whatever may come next.

Why Do I Need an Isolation Plan?

The University does not provide isolation housing, meals, or transportation to students who require isolation.

All students should have a plan for what they will do if they need to self-isolate. Having a plan will help you quickly begin isolation after testing positive and ensure you're not caught off-guard. Students who reside in University housing will need to have a plan to leave campus to isolate. Students who live off campus in non-University housing will not be able to come to campus until the end of their isolation period, and should also be prepared with a plan to isolate.

Why or When Would I Need to Isolate?

COVID-19
In line with CDC guidelines for COVID-19 isolation, the University of New Haven requires all individuals who are COVID positive to isolate off campus for five full days, with the date of their positive test result being day zero. They must also be symptom free for at least 24 hours prior to returning to campus.

Monkeypox
In line with CDC guidelines for Monkeypox prevention, the University of New Haven requires all individuals who are positive for Monkeypox to isolate until their symptoms have subsided and until their monkeypox rash has healed and a new layer of skin has formed. They must also be symptom free for at least 24 hours prior to returning to campus. If there is a significant clinical indication that a student may be positive, they may be asked to isolate pending test results to prevent further transmission.

Information to Help Develop Your Isolation Plan

  • The plan should include arrangements for transportation, isolation housing, and meals.
  • If you are not feeling well, remember to seek support from family and friends, who may be able to help you in making arrangements and reservations, as necessary.
  • You should plan to isolate off campus for the required period of time. Isolation can be longer if your symptoms do not subside. You must be symptom free for at least 24 hours prior to returning to campus.
  • If you are unable to travel home and will isolate locally, you should pre-plan to have the following items on hand to help you during your isolation:
    • N95 mask
    • thermometer
    • pain/fever reducers (Ibuprofin, Tylenol, etc.)
    • throat lozenges
    • pulse oximeter
    • gauze or bandages to cover Monkeypox rash, to limit spread to others and to the environment
    • for Monkeypox rash on hands, disposable gloves that can be discarded after each use (e.g., latex, polyurethane, or nitrile gloves)
