The Phased Plan for Return to Campus - Spring 2021: Phase 2 Information
The following guidelines have been developed to provide additional clarification on how we aim to promote the health and safety of all employees and students.
These guidelines are in compliance with orders and guidance issued by the state of Connecticut. These guidelines are applicable to all University of New Haven employees, students and guests. Employees, students and guests are collectively referred to as "individuals" below.
These guidelines are subject to change as the COVID-19 situation evolves.
Effective January 4 through January 14, 2021
Physical distancing requires minimum of six feet separation between all individuals while on campus. Care should be taken when in common areas such as hallways, classrooms, dining areas and breakrooms.
Masks are face coverings that cover the nose and mouth. Masks must be worn in all University buildings and public spaces except for individual residence hall rooms and private offices. Masks will be provided to individuals and will be located in their department and the University Campus Police Station. Individuals are permitted and encouraged to make their own masks, provided they meet the CDC guidelines. If an individual has respiratory medical issues or if wearing a mask otherwise presents a safety issue, they should inform Human Resources.
Daily Wellness Check
To help ensure the safety and wellness of all individuals, University of New Haven is requiring daily wellness checks for all persons coming to campus on a regular basis. All contractors who are working in proximity to University of New Haven employees or students will be subject to the University’s protocol (or their employer’s protocol if deemed acceptable to the University). All individuals working on campus will be asked to adhere to a daily wellness check at the start of their shift or arrival on campus.
- Symptom Questionnaire via the CoVerified app: All individuals will be required to download the CoVerified app on their smartphone and check in daily on that app. Individuals will be asked questions pertinent to mitigating risk of contagious illnesses.
- If the individual has any of the symptoms on the form, they should follow the University’s illness policy.
Individuals should not report to work on campus or visit campus if they are potentially contagious for any reason.
Employees should follow their normal call-off procedures. If an individual develops any of the symptoms on the questionnaire or is not feeling well during their employment shift, they should contact their supervisor and go home. A return to work plan/date will be determined by Human Resources.
Students should report any symptoms in the CoVerified app AND then contact Campus Health Services to request an evaluation by a health services professional. They will then provide guidance about next steps based on the evaluation of the student.
Soap, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant wipes will be provided in all open campus buildings. Individuals working on campus in proximity with others will wash their hands at least once an hour or utilize the hand sanitizing stations that are available throughout campus.
Individuals Temporarily On Campus
Individuals who have been temporarily authorized to go to campus for brief time periods must wear a mask while in common areas where there may be interaction with others. They are encouraged to complete Daily Wellness Checks via the LiveSafe App but will not require COVID-19 viral testing to access campus. Individuals must also sanitize any shared equipment that they use while on campus (e.g., copiers) by utilizing disinfecting wipes or cleaners. The colleague may remove their mask if they are in an office alone.
Staggered Work Shifts
To make social distancing more effective across the campus as we re-open, the University’s administrative offices will adopt two 5 hour shifts (8:30-1:30 and 2:00-7:00 PM) during the work day with a 30 minute break between the shifts. No office will operate with more than 50% occupancy during a shift. Remote work will continue where possible.
Breaks should not be taken together when possible. Colleagues taking breaks at the same time in the same break area must maintain social distancing of at least six feet.
Supervisors will continue with current scheduling practices to minimize colleagues working on campus. Only colleagues who are currently designated as essential are to work on campus. Individuals authorized to return to campus as a part of phased reopening must be approved by the respective Vice President in consultation with Human Resources.
All meetings and trainings will be held virtually if at all possible. If a meeting must be held in person, the meeting should be limited to the fewest number of colleagues possible. Masks and physical distancing of at least six feet are required.
Colleagues should not allow nonessential visitors/contractors on campus. Any essential vendors, contractors, or delivery personnel must wear a mask while on campus. Visitors/contractors are to be approved by a Vice President.
All high-touch areas will be cleaned and disinfected routinely in accordance with guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in spaces that are accessible to colleagues, students, and other individuals. Unless informed otherwise, daily disinfecting of office surfaces is the responsibility of office and laboratory personnel (e.g., desks, tables, copiers, handles of chairs, door knobs).
University Sponsored Travel
University associated and sponsored travel will be highly restricted. Colleagues may seek prior approval for travel from their Vice President via their supervisor.
COVID-19 Viral Testing for All Residential Students and Staff
Any residential student or staff on the University campus must obtain a negative molecular SARS-COV2 RT-PCR test prior to returning to campus. Testing must be completed within 5 business days of return to campus. Proof of negative test result should be submitted to CoVerified prior to move-in or return to work. Testing will take place weekly for a portion of the university campus population.
Probable or Confirmed Cases of COVID-19
Any individual with a positive diagnosis should not be on campus and should contact Human Resources (employees) or Campus Health Services (students). University of New Haven will follow the following protocol to ensure compliance with the orders issued by the Governor of Connecticut and the Connecticut Department of Health to respond to a probable or confirmed case of COVID-19 on campus.
- Close off areas visited by the person who is a probable or confirmed case of COVID-19.
- Open outside doors and windows and use ventilation fans to increase air circulation in the area if possible.
- Wait a minimum of 24 hours, or as long as practical, before beginning cleaning and disinfection.
- Disinfect and clean all areas such as offices, bathrooms, common areas including but not limited to break rooms, conference and training rooms, dining facilities, shared electronic equipment (e.g., keyboards, touchscreens, copiers) or anything used by the ill person.
- Identify individuals at University of New Haven that were in close contact (within about six feet for about ten minutes) with a person with a probable or confirmed case of COVID-19 from the period 48 hours before symptoms onset to the time at which the patient isolated.
- Promptly notify individuals who were in close contact with any known exposure to COVID-19 on campus. Consistency with applicable confidentiality laws will be followed.
- If exposed individuals become symptomatic, they should follow the CDC’s guidelines regarding isolation and the discontinuance of isolation.
Compliance with Guidelines
