Lyme Academy College Offers Summer Art Classes for High School Students

The Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts of the University of New Haven will host week-long art courses for high school students this summer.

April 21, 2015

The program is part of a new Pre-College Academy to offer year-round studio instruction and workshops for high school students, freshmen to seniors. The summer Pre-College Academy will offer six week-long courses, open to students with beginning through advanced level art training.

Class sizes are limited to 15, so that students will have significant contact time with the faculty. The classes will be taught in the college’s highly equipped studios, including its state-of-the art media lab with the latest technology and software.

"Faculty from Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts will teach all classes, giving high school students a chance to work with college-level instructors," said Marguerite d’Aprile Quigley, director of Lyme Academy College’s Center for Arts Programming. "These classes provide a great opportunity for students of any ability to learn more about art as well as thrive in a supportive, artistic environment."

The classes are scheduled Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3p.m.  They are:

  • 3D Modeling and Digital Sculpting, July 6 –10.Students will learn to make digital creatures and characters for games or film using Zbrush.
  • Animation, July 13 – 17. The course will teach students to animate using the Adobe creative cloud, especially the Photoshop software program. Instruction will emphasize artistic creativity, timing, motion and combining sound or music.
  • Sculpture. July 20 – 24. Observed objects are re-purposed in the third dimension so students can construct an armature and establish true form in clay. Instructor provides anatomical, structural and proportional strategies in building the sculpture.
  • Drawing, July 27 –31. Students will focus on observation to accurately map out the object/objects in front of them. Students will learn tactics to measure, plot and interpret what they see.
  • Painting, Aug. 3 –Aug.7. Using direct and indirect painting methods, students will observe form in terms of light and color. The instructor will demonstrate techniques in layering paint and use of mediums.
  • Illustration for Comics and Cartoons. Aug. 10 – 14.  The course will cover comic book design and will provide students with the skills to make their own comics. Topics include page layout, penciling, inking, lettering, and comic book storytelling. Students will develop a written and illustrated comic of their own.
