The Marvin K. Peterson Library is here to support the research and scholarship needs of the University by providing resources, information, and a wide range of services to our faculty, students, and staff.

Borrowing and Collection

Your University of New Haven ID card is your Library Card for checking out books and other physical materials. The link to My Library Account can be found either on the Library's home page or after opening the Library's Online Catalog. When the library is open, books can be returned at the Library Service Desk, when it is closed there is a book drop around the rear of the building. Additional information about Borrowing Privileges and Circulation Services is available for both faculty and students.

Access to full text electronic journals and databases is provided through our library system and provides 24/7 access to scholarly material. You can search for available journals by name or browse what is available by subject. You will be required to sign in with your University of New Haven network log-in, and with a few exceptions, our online resources are available students and faculty anywhere. To easily see if the library has full-text access to an article, you can search by DOI or PMID using tool LibKey.

If the Library does not own a book or article, you can request it through our Interlibrary Loan Service (ILL), which is also available via the web site. The ILL form is found above the list of databases obtainable via the Proxy Connection. To suggest a purchase or learn more about the library’s collection development strategy, please contact the University Librarian.

Faculty can place physical materials on Course Reserve for student use in the library, digital materials can be put on e-reserve in Canvas. The University of New Haven Course Reserve Form is available online. You can find exactly what your classes have on Course Reserve by doing a search via the Library homepage. To find what has been placed on Course Reserve, you can search by instructor, department, or course.

Facilities and Resources

The library offers a variety of spaces from large collaborative study space on the first floor, to silent individual study space on the third floor, and a café on the main level. Four Collaborative Study Rooms on the main level provide white boards, a large screen, and variety of connection options. These rooms are for student use and must be reserved. The Library has 57 Dell desktop computers and 8 iMacs for general use, as well as two scanners, and access to both color, and black and white printing. The PC computers have the Microsoft Office Suite that allow use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Power Point and SPSS available along with network connectivity.

Research and Information Literacy Support

Our library liaisons are available to partner with students, faculty, and staff at any point in their research process. From developing a topic, locating relevant resources, evaluating a publication, to citing resources, our library staff is here to provide support. You can connect with library staff via chat, by emailing libraryhelp@newhaven.edu, or by requesting a research consultation. You are also welcome to stop by the Library Service desk on the main level of the library, or if you know your liaison, email them directly. In addition to research consultations, library liaisons are available to provide workshops and instruction sessions to courses covering a range of information literacy skills.

Open Pedagogy and Publishing

Library staff are trained in open licensing and can assist with locating, assessing, and selecting open education resources as well as provide expertise on licensing options of materials and the ability to remix or edit openly licensed resources. For faculty interested in creating or publishing their own works, the library can provide support with both Pressbooks and Digital Commons. In addition to housing University theses and dissertations, Digital Commons is home to selected faculty scholarship and hosts the American Business Review.

Affiliated Programs
