West Haven, Conn., April 2, 2008 -The University of New Haven is pleased to announce that it will offer a variety of programs catering to children, traditional college students, and adult learners throughout the upcoming summer. The summer programs will include two undergraduate summer sessions, a High School Academy for current high school students seeking college credit, and three academic summer camps for children.
Current undergraduate students, visiting students, and adults seeking personal enrichment are encouraged to view summer course schedules online. The Summer I Session will begin on May 21 and end July 2; the Summer II Session will begin July 7 and end on August 14. The university's small class sizes provide a supportive, stimulating academic environment in which students have a greater opportunity to engage with peers and faculty, regardless if students are seeking a degree. Individuals looking for an activity in the summer have a number of course opportunities available including a Crime Fiction class.
The university's new High School Academy invites academically eligible high school juniors and seniors to get a head start on their college experience. Courses will be intense and last approximately four hours daily for two weeks. Classes will meet Monday, July 7, through Friday, July 18. In this short time, students will be exposed to an entire semester's worth of material and will earn college credit that can be applied to almost any college, including UNH. Course offerings include Introduction to Studio Art, Introduction to Interior Design, Global Studies/Russian Culture, Ethics, Philosophy, Civil Rights, Introduction to Multimedia, Digital Photography and Imaging I, Introduction to Music Industry, Introduction to Music, History of Rock, Elementary Music Theory, and Business of Fun.
The Tagliatela College of Engineering, the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences, and the Department of Visual & Performing Arts have collaborated with the university's University College to offer three educational and entertaining summer camps for children. The camps include the Engineering & Science Summer Institute for Young Women, Crime Scene Investigation camp, and Visual and Musical Arts camp. The Engineering & Science Summer Institute is in its second year and will again offer exciting, hands-on activities that will correlate with science and math coursework that attendees are learning in their traditional classrooms. Young women entering sixth, seventh, eighth, or ninth grade are encouraged to apply.
The Crime Scene Investigation camp for high school students is new this year and will run from July 28 until August 1. Participants will gain hands-on experience dusting fingerprints, analyzing blood samples, and investigating mock crime scenes, and will enjoy a special tour of the West Haven Police Department. The new camp will provide students with a unique experience learning about criminal justice and forensic science, two of the university's top programs.
Young children ages 7-12 can also experience life on the UNH campus in the Visual and Musical Arts camp. The camp will run for two weeks, Monday through Friday, with its opening session on July 21 and closing session on August 1. Campers will have interactive and fun experiences learning about the arts in daily art and music-related activities. Some of the activities will include drawing, painting, dramatic workshops, African drumming, and more. The academic camps are directed by highly esteemed UNH faculty, ensuring a positive, quality outcome for the students.
