Chargers Headed to Elite Eight
After Five-Set Thriller with Dowling
The UNH women's volleyball team is headed to the 2008 NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Elite Eight after a victory over the second-seeded Dowling College Golden Lions. Click here to see the video of the Chargers’ win on YouTube. The Chargers will now take on the Golden Bears of Concordia University, St. Paul, Minn., on Thursday, Dec. 4. Click here to read more. Team members Rhe-Ann Niles, Yael Rosner, Elizabeth Akinbiyi and Charisse Cotton also have received weekly Northeast-10 Conference honors. Niles was named First Team All-Northeast-10 Conference, Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year, Northeast-10 Conference All-Tournament Team and Northeast-10 Conference Tournament MVP. Rosner was named the Setter of the Week and First Team All-Northeast-10. Akinbiyi was named Freshman of the Week and the Northeast-10 Conference All-Rookie Team. Sci-Fi Movie Posters on Display Through Dec 16
The UNH Seton Art Gallery hosted the opening of a new exhibit Thursday, Nov. 20 featuring dozens of rare posters and lobby cards from scores of classic science fiction films, showcasing pieces from the collection of Wes Davis, senior lecturer in English and Film at UNH. UNH’s Koziatek and Perricone Named
To East Haven High Hall of Fame
UNH alumni Carol Koziatek ’92 MBA, the University’s associate vice president of Human Resources, and Dr. Nicholas Perricone ’70, an internationally known clinical and research dermatologist, were named to the East Haven High School Alumni Association’s Hall of Fame at an event November 23.
Recycling Bins Granted to UNH
UNH’s Sustainability Committee, formed this year to address environmental and energy issues on the campus, has had some excellent successes, including landing a grant for recycling bins to be distributed throughout campus in an effort to persuade the community to recycle. A New Offering in the Russian Film Series
The Russian Film Series “War and Peace in Russian Film” will screen “Alexandra,” a new film by Alexander Sokurov. The film will be presented with subtitles at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2 in Room 108, Kaplan Hall.
Library Posts Holiday Hours
Starting Tuesday, Nov. 18 until the winter recess, the Library will remain open until 1 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays. During the Thanksgiving recess, the Library will close at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26 and be closed Thursday, Nov. 27 through Sunday, Nov. 30. Crime Scene Investigation
Learn what it takes to investigate a crime scene. UNH presents a Crime Scene Investigation course from the “Dr. Lee and Friends” series from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, Dec. 29 in Dodds Theatre. The course is open to students and the public, and signups are being accepted now. Famed forensic scientist Dr. Henry C. Lee will discuss what it takes to become a crime scene investigator, what happens at a crime scene and much more. Price is $50 for students with ID and $100 for adults. A Primer on How to Lead
Madeleine Kunin, the former deputy secretary for Education in the Clinton Administration, is the keynote speaker for a panel discussion named for her book, “Pearls, Politics and Power: How Women Can Win and Lead,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4 at the Jewish Community Center’s Vine Auditorium, 360 Amity Road, Woodbridge. The panel includes Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz, State Comptroller Nancy Wyman, State Sen. Gayle Slossberg and Ellen Scalettar, the policy director for the Connecticut Democratic Party. Local Charitable Group
Seeks New Members
The West Shore Lodge 2832 Order of the Sons & Daughters of Italy in America, a charitable organization in West Haven, is welcoming new members. Since the group’s inception in November 2006, members have raised and donated about $10,000 to non-profit organizations. Committees include the Columbus Day Parade, Golden Lion Award Dinner, Community Service, Concert, Entertainment and More. The group holds a monthly business meeting on the first Wednesday of the month (see newsletter for new location) and a monthly dinner. Dues are $60 per year, pro-rated quarterly.
