UNH TodayA Roving Photographer
Lives, and Dies, on Mars

NASA software engineer and Mission Data Operations Team member Mike Seibert attracted crowds to his two lectures and video presentations on the twin Mars Exploration rovers known as “Spirit” and “Opportunity” for the University of New Haven Fall 2008 Alvine Engineering Professional Effectiveness and Enrichment Program this past Wednesday. Seibert gave an overview of the Mars mission to date, citing some of the countless hurdles NASA engineers have faced in developing vehicles suited for exploration of the Martian landscape, from dealing with dust storms to developing giant air bags. He also noted recent developments, including the decision to send “Spirit” into the Goddard and Von Braun Crater. He described the trip as an almost certain “death sentence” with the approach of the Martian winter and temperatures ranging from about -94 to -148 degrees Fahrenheit. Noting the rationale for the sacrifice, he explained, “…better to let her do what she was designed to do than just have her stay where she is and take the same photos for the next two years.”
