A Call to All: Nominate a Book for The Common Read
The Common Reading Committee invites anyone in the University community to nominate a book for the 2008 University of New Haven Common Read. Please send your nominations to: rjohnson@newhaven.edu. We ask that you nominate books that allow for meaningful issues to be raised, are thematically rich and of reasonable length, have interesting characters, promote reading as a pleasurable activity, and can be discussed across many academic disciplines. Get Your Flu Shot Now
Flu shots are now available for the entire campus community at Health Services, at ground level in Sheffield Hall. Those wanting a flu shot must call ext. 7079 to set up an appointment; e-mails will not be accepted. Vaccines are available while supplies last. Cost is $15.
See the Film, Read the Book
The University’s Common Reading Committee features “Haiti: Land of Tragedy, Land of Hope,” at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22 in the Alumni Lounge in the Bartels Hall Campus Center. The Committee also sponsors “Alien Invaders,” at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29 in the Alumni Lounge.
Professor To Discuss Gender Distinctions in Marketing
The College of Business Research Forums sponsors the lecture, “Sad Emotional Appeal in Public Services Advertising: The Moderating Effects of Gender,” by Dr. Cheng Lu “Charlie” Wang, associate professor of Marketing and International Business, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 in Room 124 of Maxcy Hall. Avoid Culture Shock by Attending This Lecture
Dr. Donald C. Smith, professor and past chair of the College of Business, presents “Pulling the Plug on Culture Shock: A Seven-Step Plan for Managing Travel Anxiety,” from 11 a.m. to 12:05 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24 in the Student Enrichment Center, Room 124 of Maxcy Hall as part of the College of Business Professional Enrichment Series. Dr. Smith contends that with proper preparation and realistic expectations anyone can minimize culture shock, if not avoid it entirely. The event is free and open to the public.
Internships Authority to Speak
On Friday, Nov. 9, the UNH Office of Experiential Education will host a talk by Michael True, who manages a national internship listserv and directs the Messiah College internship Office. True will speak at 8:15 a.m. in Room 124 of Maxcy Hall to local employers on “Creating Quality Internships: Best Practices for Business, Government and Non-Profit Organizations.” That afternoon, he will share the inner workings of his program to UNH Faculty in Room 120 of Buckman Hall. Justice in Russia: Russian Law Experts to Speak at UNH
Changes are now taking place in the Russian justice system, and three specialists in Russian law will appear at UNH to discuss those changes from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wed., October 24 in the Alumni Lounge. Student Group Selling Trinkets for Cancer Research
On Wednesday, Oct. 24, Thursday, Oct. 25, Monday, Oct. 29, Tuesday, Oct. 30, and Wednesday, Oct. 31, SMILE will be selling Halloween Huggers – small 4-inch stuffed Halloween characters complete with a lollipop - in Bartels Hall Campus Center with all proceeds donated to breast cancer research. SMILE will even deliver them to an office or room on Wednesday, Oct. 31, Halloween.
Dunkin’ Donuts Recalls Glow Sticks
for Safety Reasons
Dunkin’ Donuts has issued a recall for one million glow sticks, citing potential choking and strangulation hazards. The company has been giving the glow sticks away for free upon purchase of doughnuts. Click here to read the Consumer Product Safety Commission information on the glow sticks. Anyone with a glow stick may return them to any Dunkin' Donuts for a free dougnut.
Matlab Help Offered at Workshop
Dr. B. Aliane, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, presents the workshop titled “Getting Start with Matlab” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 in Room B208 in the Tagliatela College of Engineering. Sponsored by the Engineering Professional Effectiveness and Enrichment Program, the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers and the Connecticut IEEE Signal Processing Society, the workshop focuses on Matrix laboratory, a multi-purpose application by The MathWorks Inc.

Gaboury Named to Human Trafficking Council
Oskar Schindler Humanities Foundation Endowed Professor Dr. Mario Thomas Gaboury, professor and chair of Criminal Justice, has been appointed a member of the Connecticut Trafficking in Persons Council. The Council was created pursuant to Public Act 07-107.
Members will identify criteria for services to child and adult victims of human trafficking, and develop recommendations to strengthen state and local efforts to prevent human trafficking and prosecute traffickers. The council will provide reports and proposed legislation will be provided to the Connecticut General Assembly
University Offering Long-Term Care Insurance
The University of New Haven sponsors a long-term care insurance plan for eligible actively-at-work employees and their eligible family members. Could you afford the cost of long-term care services, either at home or in a nursing home setting? The enrollment period for the long-term care insurance plan is Nov. 5 through Dec. 7 of this year. Associate Provost to Referee Candidates
Associate Provost Dr. Ira Kleinfeld, left, will moderate a debate sponsored by the Orange Chamber of Commerce between the Republican and Democratic candidates for First Selectman of Orange from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26 at the Grassy Hill Country Club in Orange. Breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. The candidates are James Zeoli, the Republican incumbent, and Paul Tarbox, his Democratic challenger. Sikorsky Manager to Speak on Role of Skills Diversity in Engineering
Mike Ambrose, general manager of Precision Machined Components at Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford, will speak on “Skills Diversity Role in the Field of Manufacturing Engineering,” from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31 in Room B307 of the Tagliatela College of Engineering as part of the Robert Alvine Engineering Professional Effectiveness and Enrichment Program.
UNH: A Leader in Experiential Education
Faculty and staff interested in becoming certified in Experiential Education through the National Society of Experiential Education Academy should contact Dr. Christie Boronico, assistant provost for Experiential Education, at cboronico@newhaven.edu. Learn to Recognize Abusive Behavior
Assistant Professor Leila Dutton of The Henry C. Charger Huddle a Rousing Success
At the Charger Huddle held this past Friday at the Belvedere, this year’s UNH Women’s Basketball Team joined with the 1987 UNH Women’s National Championship Basketball Team for a combined-team photo. Also on hand at the Huddle were the 1977 NCAA Runner-Up men's soccer team and the 1997 NCAA Runner-Up football team.
Learn about History and Science References at Library
A workshop will be held on two library reference centers of help to students and fans of history, and to researchers in the sciences. The workshop, open to all on campus, will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Monday, Oct. 22 in Library Smart Classroom 213 as part of the Library Information Database Series. Free Book Featuring UNH Children’s Theater
To Be Distributed Throughout Area
Day of Caring participants this past Friday, including Associate Professor of Fire Science Marty O’Connor, left, discovered while working with the Children's Museum of New Haven that an English-Spanish publication of the New Haven Free Library, Open Doors to Family Learning, features the University’s Alliance Children's Theater prominently on its first and second pages. The books will be distributed for free through the Children’s Museum to thousands of families throughout Greater New Haven.
Be Informed About Crime
New Campus Safety booklets are available at the UNH Police Department. The booklet includes crime statistics for 2004, 2005 and 2006. The statistics will also be posted to the UNH web page (http://newton.newhaven.edu/cleryact) and are available on the website of the University’s Department of Education.
Staged Accident Raises Awareness
UNH’s student Docudrama Committee staged a mock car accident at the University on Oct. 18 in the German Club parking lot. The event was well attended.

Ambassador to Salute Exhibit of Art of Papua New Guinea
Fenn and Phyllis Seton’s collection of museum-quality art from Papua New Guinea, now on exhibit in the Dodds Hall Atrium, will be celebrated at an opening reception at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in the Atrium. Ambassador Robert Guba Aisi of the Permanent Mission of Papua New Guinea to the United Nations will be on hand to celebrate the opening of the exhibit, titled “Art of Papua New Guinea.” An International Coffee Hour, in conjunction with the reception, will be held immediately after the reception. All are invited.

Talk Centers on Politics and Business in China
Dr. Ben Judd of the Department of Communication and Marketing, speaks Monday, Nov. 5 in Room 124 of Maxcy Hall on the topic, “The Political Process of Doing Business in China.” His talk focuses on how typical practices may be understood differently if local needs and opportunities, rather than national priorities, are considered. Sponsored by the College of Business Research Forums, the talk will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Employee Benefits Fair
The University’s first employee benefits fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 6 in the Alumni Lounge and the Upper Lounge of Bartels Hall Campus Center. The fair will include representatives from more than 30 vendors, including insurance companies, banks, TIAA-CREF, and many more. All University employees are encouraged to attend; door prizes will be awarded.

Fall Bartels Fellow Will Present Lecture Nov. 8
Successful Internet electronics retailer William Crutchfield, founder and CEO of Crutchfield Corporation, speaks on “Being an Entrepreneur for all the Right Reasons” at the Fall Bartels Lecture Series at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8 in Dodds Theatre. The campus community is encouraged to attend.

Revision of Computer Lab Hours
Last week UNHToday noted the new hours for the computer lab in New Hall. Since then, they have changed to include the following: Mondays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Thursdays from 12 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The lab will be open only during those hours.

Don’t Miss This Unique Celebration
Experiments involving Gak, Bouncy Balls and Glow Stars, as well as a Mole Day Scavenger Hunt with prizes, will be part of UNH’s celebration of National Chemistry Week, Oct. 22 through Oct. 25. SpeakOut Submission Needed Now
For a candlelight vigil on Monday, Oct. 22, SpeakOut is looking for individuals to share a story of an unhealthy relationship that was either personally experienced or experienced by a friend. Individuals are also needed to do a reading, which could be a poem or inspirational article. All entries will be read anonymously unless otherwise noted and are due by 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22. Entries can be sent to or dropped off in SpeakOut’s mailbox.

Week of Remembrance Events Set
Monday, Oct. 22 through Thursday, Oct. 25 marks the UNH Week of Remembrance to honor victims of domestic violence. Each day, the Dining Hall will feature the display “An Empty Place at the Table,” which will visually show the impact of domestic violence. The Victimology Club will be sponsoring the decoration of door hangers and wooden shapes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, Thursday, Oct. 25, and Friday, Oct. 26 in Bartels Hall Campus Center. Door hangers will be $1 and ornaments will be 50 cents.

Madden Bowl ’07 Signups Oct. 22
Event Set for Nov. 3 With Prizes
Sign ups for Madden Bowl ’07 will take place Oct. 22 at midnight and teams will be drafted Oct. 22 at 9:30 p.m. in Bartels Hall Campus Center Meeting Rooms A and B. If you are one of the first 32, you will be able to choose your team then. There will be a $3 donation for food. However, if you have a Madden 2007 or 2008 game, or game console that you are willing to lend to us for the day, your donation will be waived. The event, sponsored by the College Republicans, Gaming Club, and Sports Industry Club, is set for Nov. 3 from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Bartels Hall Campus Center Alumni Lounge. Post Your Activities on Bartels Ad Board
The LED Board in the Dining Hall of the Bartels Hall Campus Center is available to advertise student activities and campus events. Interested students must send a request via email or drop off a paper request in person. Requests must be submitted at least two business days prior to the date you would like the information posted.
