Campus invited to Reception Wednesday for Holocaust Exhibit
The reception for “Memory & Legacy,” an exhibit telling the story of the New Haven Holocaust Memorial, will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10 in the Atrium at Dodds Hall. Martin Schiller, a UNH alumnus, Holocaust survivor and author of the book, “Bread, Butter and Sugar: a Boy’s Journey through the Holocaust in Post-War Europe,” along with former UNH President Larry De Nardis, will speak. The exhibit, which opened this past Monday, is available for viewing from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day in Dodds Atrium. It details the story of the first Holocaust memorial to be built on public land, and pays tribute to the six million who died during the Holocaust.

Learn about Voodoo and Tourism at Talk
Dr. Jim Murdy of the Hospitality and Management program will host “Voodoo and Dark Tourism on Hispaniola” at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 in the Upper Lounge, Bartels Hall Campus Center. This event is sponsored by the Common Reading Committee.

Fall Bartels Fellow Will Present Lecture Nov. 8
Successful Internet electronics retailer William Crutchfield, founder and CEO of Crutchfield Corporation, will speak on “Being an Entrepreneur for all the Right Reasons” at the Fall Bartels Lecture Series at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8 in Dodds Theatre. The campus community is encouraged to attend.

Justice in Russia: Russian Law Experts to Speak at UNH
Changes are now taking place in the Russian justice system, and three specialists in Russian law will appear at UNH to discuss those changes from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wed., October 24 in the Alumni Lounge. UNH Student Helps ESPN With Documentary
Nam Kan Cho, an M.B.A. student from South Korea, worked with ESPN producer and UNH alumnus Craig Mortali this past Thursday on ESPN’s documentary-in-progress “Triumph and Tragedy: The Ray Mancini Story” at the University’s studios. In a fight that would change boxing forever, Mancini, a WBA lightweight champion, fought Deuk Koo Kim, a popular South Korean boxer, in 1982. Comatose after the fight, Kim died some months later. Mancini fell into a deep depression, then made a comeback. “It’s a compelling story about an athlete who succeeded against all odds,” Mortali said.

Global Studies Lecture Series
Nayan Chanda, co-editor with Brookings Institution head Strobe Talbott of "The Age of Terror: America and the World After September 11", will discuss "Who is Behind Globalization and Is It a Threat?" at the first event of the Global Studies Lecture Series at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15 in Dodds Theatre. Chanda, former editor of the Far Eastern Economic Review and the Asian Wall Street Journal Weekly, has authored more than a dozen books on Asian politics, security and foreign policy. He is director of Publications and editor of YaleGlobal Online Magazine.

UNH’s Study-Abroad Expertise in Demand
Dennis Nostrand, vice president for Enrollment Management, an authority on study abroad and a specialist in study-abroad freshman programs, spoke recently at the annual conference of the National Association for College Admission Counseling in Austin, Texas, regarding international study for first-year students. Following his talk, Nostrand, left, discussed the University’s study-abroad options with an Austin high school senior and her mother.

Get Fired Up Sunday for the Charger Basketball Season
Cheer on the Chargers at Midnight Madness, beginning at 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14 in the Charger Gymnasium. Midnight Madness allows students to see the women’s and men’s basketball teams in action. Included will be music, performances, the introduction of the men's and women's basketball teams, a 3-point shooting championship, and the night's biggest contest - the Free Tuition Hoops Challenge. UNH-United Way Work Toward Completing Mission
College of Arts and Sciences Dean Ron Nowaczyk, the James Bond of this year’s UNH-United Way campaign on campus, wants his agents to know that the campaign has a mere two weeks – and about $2,500 - to go. Each week a mission has been established. This week’s mission is establishing “Economically Vibrant Communities” by creating opportunities for all people to secure safe and affordable housing and acquire skills and training to maintain employment. Cheer On a Soapbox Filled with Students
UNH students Jason Bernstein, Emily Gorecki, Mike Forgette and Jessica Emerson will compete as racers – in a soapbox designed as a utensil drawer - in the first Northeast Red Bull Soapbox Saturday, Oct. 13 in Providence, R.I. Bernstein will dress as a spoon, and Gorecki and Forgette will act as a fork and a knife to push the vehicle. “We went in with no prior knowledge, and we have learned to build a soapbox,” Gorecki said. “It has been a learning experience, and rewarding.” Sixty teams will be competing on a steep hill. Professor to Speak at Hartford Club
The World Affairs Council of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Center for International Business and Education Research is presenting a lecture, “Charging Elephant, Soaring Dragon: Business Environments and Business Strategies for India and China,” by Dr. Usha C. V. Haley, professor of International Business and director of the Global Business Center at UNH, at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14 at the Hartford Club at 46 Prospect St, Hartford. Reservations are required. Cost is $35 for lunch and the lecture for those who claim a current UNH affiliation or are members of the World Affairs Council, or $45 for general admission. New Director of Human Relations Named
In her first move as the new Director of Human Resources at the University, Penny Pecka has announced the University’s first employee benefits fair 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 6 in the Alumni Lounge and the Upper Lounge of Bartels Hall Campus Center. The fair will include representatives from more than 30 vendors, including insurance companies, banks, TIAA-CREF, and many more. All University employees are encouraged to attend; door prizes will be awarded. A longtime Human Resources professional at UNH, Pecka was most recently associate director of Human Resources.

Sorority Earns Chapter Letters
Members of the UNH sorority Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. were awarded their chapter letters Sept. 29, effectively changing their chapter’s name to the Alpha Lambda Chapter of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc.

The Office of Student Activities now has $3 off coupons for Fright Haven, Connecticut’s newest haunted attraction. Fright Haven is located at 480 Saw Mill Road in West Haven and is open Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 4 to Nov. 4. Coupons are given on a first-come, first-serve basis in the Office of Student Activities.

New Haven's annual College Night, a popular venue showcasing collegiate talent, takes place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Toad's Place. The Charger Bulletin is seeking a musician, band, dancer or any other performer to demonstrate their talents. There will be Gamecube prizes, popcorn, cotton candy, henna tattoos, caricatures, free T-shirts and more. Radio station KC-101 also will be on hand to publicize the performances.
