The latest information on Charger men’s soccer goalie and team leader James Hilaire ’09 Criminal Justice, who suffered a serious injury after a collision with an opposing player during a game Wednesday evening against Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass., is available at http://www.newhaven.edu/athletics/news/24700/. The hospital requests that all inquiries on James’ condition be directed to the website. E-mails also may be sent to James through the website. Cards and notes may be sent to James Hilaire, c/o Boston Medical Center, One Boston Medical Center Place, Boston, MA 02118, where James is being treated in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Please keep James and his family in your thoughts.
Amid Fanfare, Final Beam Placed
On Residence Hall Frame
President Steve Kaplan was joined by a host of dignitaries including Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and West Haven Mayor John Picard ’87 this past Thursday to mark the placement of the final beam on the residence hall frame. Hear Top Woman at ESPN
Share Secrets Oct. 2
Rosa Gatti, the highest-ranking woman at ESPN, the nation’s premier sports network, will deliver the semi-annual Bartels Lecture at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 in Dodds Theatre. The campus community is invited. Gatti built the ESPN brand to what it is today, and she will share the secret of her success at the lecture. Click here to read more on Gatti.
Appellate Court Draws Crowd For Criminal Cases
Dodds Theatre was transformed into a courtroom this past Wednesday to host the Connecticut Appellate Court. Two actual criminal cases were argued in front of dozens of UNH faculty and students. Click here to view photos.

To Hold 4K Run/Walk 4Kay
The University of New Haven women's basketball team will be holding the 4K Run/Walk 4Kay at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4. Display Showcases
Student Summer Research
The results were impressive, the explanations even more so at an exhibit
this past Friday designed to highlight the results of the Summer
Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program. The exhibit was held in
Bartels Hall, the campus center, and varied from bone tissue chemistry
to human responses to music and film. Brian Francisco '09 Mechanical
Engineering, in photo at left, discovered a new way to identify
materials using an Atomic Force microscope, prompting the filing of a
provisional patent for the technique.

UNH, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, and the League of American Orchestras invite all those interested in music careers to attend the Orchestra Careers and Opportunities Symposium – including a musical performance by NHSO Cellist Mihai Marica - from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30 in Dodds Hall Theatre.
Faculty Enjoy Success on Trip
For UNH Experiential Education
UNH faculty members, led by Associate Dean for Experiential Education Christie Boronico, represented the University this past week at the 2008 Annual National Conference for Experiential Education in Disney World. Kathy Forkin and Dale Finn presented the University’s E-Mentor program to a packed room and applause. Five universities signed on to begin chapters of the UNH-chartered Society for Experiential Education.

West Haven Happenings
Numerous events are planned for downtown West Haven in the next several weeks. Here are just a few:
Apple Festival, Oct. 3, 5 p.m to 9 p.m.; Oct. 4, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Oct. 5, noon to 5 p.m., West Haven Green. Rain or shine. The fifth annual festival, hosted by the First Congregational Church, celebrates with arts and crafts, food and entertainment. Other activities include an apple pie bake-off, an auction, a pumpkin-decorating contest, bake and book sales, carousel rides and hayrides.
Breast Cancer Candlelight Vigil, Oct. 10, 7 p.m., West Haven Green. Rain or shine. Part of the city’s ongoing campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer, one of America’s leading causes of cancer death among women and men, the ceremony is presented by the West Haven Breast Cancer Awareness Committee.

Foreign Film Series
Instructors from the Global Studies and Foreign Language programs have created a foreign language film series that will present films on Thursday evenings for several weeks. Join UNH’s Wrestling Club:
Next Meeting Oct. 2
Men, women – everyone is invited to join UNH’s Wrestling Club. The Club is holding a meeting at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2 in the presentation room of the Admissions Office in Bayer Hall.
The Club has 20 members this year, up 100 percent from last year. Two women are currently members. Support the Club’s effort to incorporate other sports into the life of the campus.
