Football Makes a Comeback:
Invite to Join Northeast 10 Spotlights University’s
Strong Athletic Potential, Academic Profile
The presidents of the Northeast 10 have extended an invitation to the University of New Haven to join their athletic conference, effectively bringing football back to the UNH campus “Many of you already realize that this is a huge move forward for us in a number of ways,” President Kaplan said in a note sent to the University community Thursday, “Membership in the Northeast 10 enhances our athletic potential, raises our academic profile, and marks us as a university that is aggressively moving forward.” Learn more.

New Residence Hall on the Drawing Board
Plans are underway to begin construction of a new $40 million, 400-bed residence hall in the spring of 2008 just off Ruden Street. The residences will offer single rooms within a suite that will be equipped with a full kitchen. It will be ready for September 2009 occupancy. Click here to see illustration.
“Painters' Projects” Opens at the Seton Gallery
The Seton Art Gallery’s newest exhibit, “Painters' Projects,” opened Wednesday, Sept. 19 with a reception in the Gallery and an artist’s lecture. The exhibit of new paintings and related projects by Suzanne Chamlin, Julia Coash and Maria Creyts, runs until Oct. 17. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Survey Seeks Input on Victuals at Rec Center
The Hazell Nut Café is conducting a survey to determine what types of healthy food and beverages users of the David A. Beckerman Recreation Center would like to see offered at the center. Click here to take the survey.
Text Messaging Available for Campus Information
The University is offering anyone in the campus community the option of receiving important alerts regarding public safety, weather and parking via text message direct to a cell phone, PDA, or other wireless device. To sign up, click here. Participants may register up to two cell phones and two e-mail addresses. Those experiencing problems with the service may contact Alan MacDougall at alanm@newhaven.edu.
At Ivoryton Playhouse
The Ivoryton Playhouse will perform “Tuesday's With Morrie” Oct. 24 to Nov. 11. The schedule includes Wednesday and Sunday matinees, as well as evening performances Wednesday through Saturday. Click here for more information.
University, Symphony Sign Off on Partnership
Citing a longstanding relationship with the New Haven Symphony – including the internship of Marquis Bell ’08, at the Symphony and the involvement of Jim Wright, director of Development for the Symphony who serves on the UNH College of Arts and Sciences Advisory Board – President Kaplan cemented a partnership with the Symphony that will brings its offices to the UNH campus. Dr. Kaplan, left, and Wright, right, along with Symphony Executive Director Natalie Forbes and College of Arts and Science Dean Ron Nowaczyk, signed the agreement this past Tuesday. The collaboration developed over the summer after Forbes approached Dr. Kaplan about relocating the Symphony’s administrative offices to the UNH campus. “My wife and I have taken over one hundred students to NHSO concerts.” Kaplan said. “This partnership is a natural ‘next step’ in providing the campus with access to world-class talent through performances and classroom instruction.”
University Fact Book Available on Intranet
UNH’s first comprehensive Fact Book is now available to faculty and staff on the University’s Intranet. The document contains information on all aspects of the University. The Fact Book will be updated every year. To view the fact book on campus, go to the Intranet and type intra.
U.S. Veterans: Contact Alumni Association Regarding Service Medal
For Veteran's Day 2007, the UNH Alumni Association would like to recognize the sacrifices of faculty, staff, alumni and current students who have or are currently serving in the Armed Forces of the United States, particularly those who are veterans of a conflict and meet the criteria for the Connecticut Wartime Service Medal. We will present these awards at the University’s annual Veterans Day event at noon Monday, Nov. 12 at the flagpole in front of Maxcy Hall. Dr. Gaboury Wins Award
Professor and Chairman of the Department of Criminal Justice Dr. Mario Gaboury will be honored with the Victim Assistance Award by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Connecticut at their Annual Recognition Dinner Tuesday, Oct. 16. The award is presented annually to individuals dedicated to MADD's mission to stop drunk driving. Gaboury directs the University’s Crime Victim Study Center.
Constitution Day Events Illuminate
Country’s Origins
The campus marked Constitution Day Sept. 17 with a series of events that drew students to the Bartels Hall Campus Center, as well as eye-catching, informative signs on campus. “It’s good to educate everyone on campus that it‘s Constitution Day,” said Valbona Halim ’09 Political Science, a member of the University’s Legal Society. “We want students to appreciate the fact that our country is a world of opportunity.” Learn more.
October is “Ideas are Free” month
President Kaplan has marked October “Ideas are Free” month, creating an e-mail box available to all contributors. Send ideas – no matter how small – to the address IdeasAreFree@newhaven.edu. The concept springs from a talk given in October 2004 at UNH by Alan G. Robinson and Dean M. Schroeder, authors of “Ideas are Free: “How the Idea Revolution Is Liberating People and Transforming Organizations.” Those who send in an idea will receive a chance to enter a raffle. So start thinking!
A University Orchestra is Born
The University’s new orchestra, the brainchild of Guillermo Mager, the chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at the University, is looking for a few dedicated musicians. (String players please apply!)The orchestra comprises traditional instruments including violin, viola, cello, clarinet, flute, and trumpet. Mager is hoping to schedule one to two performances per semester. Contact him at gmager@newhaven.edu or call 932-7452.
New Faces at UNH
Julia K. Parker, an architect with a background in campus planning and architectural design, who most recently was university architect at the University of Chicago, has been named the University’s new vice president of Facilities. Parker is a former senior architect and planner for Yale who directed the planning of the University Arts area in downtown New Haven.
Caroline Koziatek ’92 M.B.A., is the University’s new associate vice president of Human Resources. Koziatek most recently served as vice president of Human Resources for Wellpoint’s new East Region, which encompassed about 15,000 employees serving more than 10 million members.
Sign Up Today To Hear Common Read Author Speak
Signups end today for the University-sponsored bus trip to hear Tracy Kidder, author of this year’s Common Read selection, “Mountains Beyond Mountains,” speak Monday, Oct. 1 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Watertown. Sign up in the Dean of Students’ Office in Bartels Hall Campus Center. The bus will leave the campus at 5:15 p.m. Oct. 1 for the 7 p.m. lecture. The event is free and open to the public.
Breast Cancer Walk Planned

Men's and Women's Soccer Teams Break in New Turf Field
The UNH men’s soccer team was the first to practice on the University’s spectacular new turf Kayo Field last week and the women's soccer team was the first to play, scoring a 4-0 win against Georgian Court University Saturday. The $1.3 million artificial turf facility, located behind New Hall, provides playing and practice space for UNH’s men’s and women’s soccer teams and women’s lacrosse team, as well as for the University’s strong intramural program.
College Aid Bill Heads to White House
Students dependent on tuition assistance will be heartened to hear that a $20 billion college aid bill was sent to the White House for signing this past Tuesday. The bill, which President Bush was expected to sign, is the “largest investment in college education since the 1944 GI bill provided tuition aid to millions of World War II vets,” according to a story published Sept. 19 in USA Today. The bill will increase Pell Grants, cancel unpaid loan balances for borrowers who work at least 10 years in public service and who make payments for those 10 years, and will let federal student loan borrowers make payments based on their income. University Researches Law School Concept
President Kaplan announced Wednesday that the University has received permission from the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors to embark upon a feasibility study to create a law school at UNH. Dr, Kaplan will seek final approval for this initiative at the Board of Governors’ meeting on September 27. This initiative comes after a year of investigation. Learn more.

United Way Dollars Multiply and
Campus Prize Winners Are Announced
At the conclusion of week two of UNH’s United Way campaign, 85 faculty and staff had donated $7,698. Seven campus contributors won prizes in the weekly campaign drawing. Congratulations to the winners. Intramural Registration
Starting Monday, Sept. 24, registration will begin for sports that include flag football, basketball, kickball, tennis, and racquetball. Play begins Monday, Oct. 22 and is open to all students, faculty, and staff. To sign up, stop by the Campus Recreation Office next to the Alumni Lounge in the Bartels Hall Campus Center. Day of Caring: Give a Book to a Child
As part of United Way's Days of Caring, Megan Sickler in the Community Service Office is sponsoring a book drive to collect new and gently used children’s books and parenting books. The drive has already collected more than 75 books and will run through Friday, Sept. 28th. Drop-off boxes are located in the library, the Jazzman’s Café at Bartels Hall Campus Center and the Community Service office. Sickler hopes to collect 500 books to benefit local children. Faculty Lunch: Learn about Chinese Business Culture
Dr. Ben Judd, professor of Marketing and International Business, will speak on the topic, “Experiencing Chinese Business Culture: The Summer 2007 M.B.A Trip” at a brown-bag lunch for faculty to be held from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25 at the Moulton Lounge in Bartels Hall Campus Center. Lunch will be provided for faculty participants; faculty members should sign their name at the checkout with the cashier in Bartels Dining Hall.
Lecture Addresses Globalization
Guest speaker Nayan Chanda of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization will present a lecture, "Who Is Behind Globalization and Is It a Threat?" at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15 at Dodds Theatre. The lecture is part of the UNH Global Studies Lecture Series.
Research Day Promotes Student Work
Summer Undergraduate Research Day will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 28 in the Bartels Hall Campus Center. Students will present posters with a short description of their research in the format of a fair, and will be available to answer questions. A reception with light refreshments will follow from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the center. To see the student research topics, click here.

The University College will hold an open house for faculty, staff and students from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the second floor of Echlin Hall Sept. 28. Newly renovated smart classrooms and the new offices of the University College will be showcased.
