Hundreds of students either registered to vote or filled in an absentee ballot application - for a total registration of 18 percent of UNH’s student body – during voter registration drives held by the College Democrats this past week.
Sign the Final Beam of the New Residence Hall
Mark your calendars, Blackberries and computerized datebooks for the morning of Sept. 25. From 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sept. 25, the entire campus community is invited to sign the residence hall’s last structural beam.
At 11 a.m. that day, President Kaplan, Board of Governors Chair Samuel S. Bergami Jr. and local dignitaries will mark the day.
Come Out and Cheer for Football
Three Home Games Scheduled
The University’s Football Club, which officially becomes a team in the 2009-2010 academic year when it begins to compete in the NCAA Northeast-10, wants your support. The schedule for practices/scrimmages is: 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 Dean Junior College at home; 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3 Milford Academy at home; 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, Salve Regina at home.
Connecticut Appellate Court Comes to UNH
Witness lawyers and judges in action when the Connecticut Appellate Court comes to UNH to hear arguments in two actual criminal cases. This historic UNH event will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 24 in Dodd’s Theatre. The first case’s arguments start at 9:30 a.m.; the second case’s arguments start at 10:50 a.m. Dodd’s Theatre will be a courtroom with specific rules of behavior followed and items prohibited. Also, all who enter must pass through security, including a metal detector.

Share Secrets Oct. 2
Rosa Gatti, the highest-ranking woman at ESPN, the nation’s premier sports network, is the University’s 2008 Autumn Bartels Fellow. Gatti built the ESPN brand to what it is today, and she will share the secret of her success at the Bartels Lecture at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 in Dodds Theatre. All are invited. Kites Take Off
At Common Read Event
In conjunction with the reading of this year’s Common Read book, “The Kite Runner,” an event, “Kite Fighting/Flying Festivals of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan,” held this past Thursday, Sept. 18 in Bartels Hall, the campus center, attracted dozens of students who drew artwork, then affixed it to sticks to create kites.

Book Drive for Children's Books
On Monday, Sept. 15, the annual United Way “Every Child Deserves a Book of Their Own” book drive began at the University, with the goal to collect new or gently used books for children six years old and younger, and books for pre-teens. Read to Grow, Inc., and New Haven Reads will distribute the books throughout the region. You may deposit your books in boxes placed throughout the campus. Questions? West Haven Happenings
Numerous events are planned for downtown West Haven in the next several weeks. Here are just a few:
Apple Festival, Oct. 3, 5 p.m to 9 p.m.; Oct. 4, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. ;Oct. 5 noon to 5 p.m.; West Haven Green. rain or shine. The fifth annual festival, hosted by the First Congregational Church, celebrates with arts and crafts, food and entertainment. Other activities include an apple pie bake-off, an auction, a pumpkin-decorating contest, bake and book sales, carousel rides and hayrides.
Breast Cancer Candlelight Vigil, Oct. 10, 7 p.m., West Haven Green. Rain or shine. Part of the city’s ongoing campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer, one of America’s leading causes of cancer death among women and men, the ceremony is presented by the West Haven Breast Cancer Awareness Committee.

Sign Up to Serve
The Graduate Student Council executive board has two positions that need to be filled: President and Community Service Chair. The president leads Graduate Student Council meetings and e-board meetings, sits on University task forces, councils and advisory boards as needed, and acts as the primary contact representative for the graduate student body. The community service chair arranges for community outreach projects through the UNH community, the Greater West Haven community and national organizations. Elections will be held during the next general meeting at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24. Students interested in running may have a peer nominate them or may self-nominate. 2008 SURF Program Research Day
