Making Beautiful Music Together:
New Haven Symphony to Call UNH Home
The New Haven Symphony will be calling the University of New Haven home once it sets up its offices on the campus this fall. To introduce itself to the campus community, the Symphony will present a free concert at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18 in the Alumni Lounge at the Bartels Hall Campus Center. Pianist Spencer Myer will perform. The Symphony is moving its offices – and its music – to the former facilities house on the corner of Ruden Street and Campbell Avenue. In return for the physical space, the University will receive:
  • A chamber music series on campus
  • Internship opportunities for our students
  • Music instruction for our students
  • Rehearsals and performances on campus based on mutually agreed-upon times
  • The new NHSO conductor, William Boughton, will be a visiting professor and guest lecturer in our Music and Sound Recording Program. Click here to read a recent New York Times profile of Boughton.
  • The signing of the agreement of collaboration between the Symphony and the University will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept., 17 during the New Haven Symphony Orchestra's first Board of Directors meeting on the UNH campus. UNH-United Way Day of Caring a Huge Success
Thanks to Director of Athletics Deborah Chin and her team, the weeds didn't stand a chance Sept. 10 at New Haven's Peace Park. OAS employee Janet Buckley revamped the Access database at New Haven Reads. Susan Turner from the Provost's Office and Karen Sifaldi from Arts & Science played dolls and blocks with young children at the West Haven Community House. Scores of University volunteers fanned out across the region as part of the United Way Day of Caring. “It's been great for the community,” said Carol Koziatek, UNH's new associate vice president of Human Resources, who was working at New Haven Reads. “And I've made new friends.”

Keep Eyes on Road, but Don't Miss Our New Billboard
Motorists traveling southbound on I-95 can't miss the new and improved University of New Haven billboard facing the exit ramp. It offers a visual reminder of the University's undergraduate and graduate programs to drivers using the most-traveled highway in New England. Click here to see our new billboard.
    Campus Remembers 9/11
Hundreds of students, along with faculty and staff, joined a remembrance for the victims of 9/11 on the quad this past Wednesday. Campus minister Martin O'Connor led a prayer service, students read passages from the Bible and the Koran, participants lit candles, USGA president Louis Eswood III spoke about the nature of bravery, the national anthem was sung, and a choir sang “America the Beautiful.” A Color Guard from the Allingtown Fire Department began the candlelight procession. “It was a very important night for our students, because many of them are studying forensic science and criminal justice and they feel very strongly about service and what those in the firefighting and criminal justice fields did that day,” said Dean of Students Becky Johnson, who helped plan the vigil. “We started it the actual night of 9/11, and we've been doing it every year since.”
Thousands Expected for UNH Open Houses
More than 1,500 visitors, including families, are expected to tour the campus during each of the University's three Open Houses on Sunday, Sept. 30; Sunday, Oct. 21; and Sunday, Nov. 11. "The number of students visiting the campus this summer almost doubled from last summer," said Kevin Phillips, director of Undergraduate Admissions. “Pre-registration for the Open Houses is much higher than it was a year ago,” he says. “There's definitely a high interest in the University right now.”
    Paris, Rome: UNH Study Abroad
    Opportunities Expand
The campus of Cultural Experiences Abroad, one of the University's partners in Global Education, is now open in Paris, and another will soon be opening in Rome, creating even more opportunities to study abroad for UNH students.

UNH'S Education Department Sets the Standard Statewide
The Connecticut State Board of Education recently re-accredited the University's graduate education program for the maximum five-year period following a rigorous re-accreditation process. The board was so impressed with the UNH Education Department's documents supporting its accreditation that it is borrowing them to use for future accreditation teams. The board also has invited Education Department faculty to help train other colleges/universities in the state as they prepare for their program reviews.
