Who is the Hazell in the Hazell Nut Café?
He's just opened one of the finest restaurants in Florida – and we're not the only ones extolling its virtues – after finding success as CEO of a hugely successful chain of seafood restaurants and a wholesale seafood business. Jeffery's Restaurant & Piano Bar in Orlando is drawing crowds and rave reviews for its menu and its ambiance. Behind the success is Jeffery Hazell '83 B.S. Hotel/Restaurant Management, the name behind the Hazell Nut Café, a popular coffee shop and stopping-off spot nestled in Maxcy Hall. Hazell's sponsorship of the café is just another in his continuing efforts to support his alma mater. "If I hadn’t gone to the University of New Haven, I wouldn’t be where I am in life," Hazell says. "Now I want to help the students at the University as much as I can."

Two programs held at UNH this summer drew teachers from states as far flung as Kentucky and Indiana. At the one-week training course, "Forensic Science for Educators," offered by The Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science at UNH, high school teachers learned about drug and evidence analysis, forensic toxicology, arson and explosives. Professor Howard Harris showed the group how to determine whether a soil sample from a suspect’s shoe or automobile matched a control sample from a crime scene. In the other program, the UNH-Greater New Haven Collaborative in Earth and Physical Science Education helped high school teachers master a pre-engineering curriculum they will teach at their own high schools. University faculty and master teachers – high school teachers who have attended the summer institute and taught the classes in their respective high schools – taught the courses.

Forensic Anthropologist Profiled
The Monday, Sept. 10 issue of the Boston Globe profiled the Executive Director of The Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science at UNH Dr. Al Harper, highlighting his work as a forensic anthropologist. The article notes Dr. Harper’s recent discovery regarding the remains of an Inca warrior with small holes at the front and back of his skull. The remains were found by archeologists near the site of a 1536 battle with Spanish conquistadors in Peru. The articles notes, “Harper was brought in to confirm what archeologists had suspected; the holes were caused by a Spanish musket ball, and the man was awarded the posthumous honor of being the first known gunshot victim in the New World.” Dr. Harper worked on this research with UNH Associate Professor and Director of the Forensic Science Program Tim Palmbach.

Comments on a Lawsuit
Usha C. V. Haley, professor of international business and the director of the Global Business Center at the University of New Haven, was quoted recently by the E-Commerce Times in a story about a lawsuit filed by a human rights organization that claims that the Internet portal Yahoo’s cooperation with the Chinese government resulted in the torture and 10-year jail term of Wang Xiaoning. Xiaoning has used a Yahoo account to anonymously post to the Web materials relating to the Tianamen Square massacre. Yahoo provided the account’s identifying details at the request of the Chinese government, which arrested Xiaoning. The World Organization for Human Rights USA then filed suit. "This is an ethical issue," Haley was quoted as saying.
