A First in Connecticut: Freshmen Head To London
in Unique Program
Thirteen incoming freshmen are spending their first semester studying at Roehampton University in England this fall as part of UNH's new Freshman Study Abroad initiative. UNH's program is believed to be the first of its kind in Connecticut. Learn more.
Construction Completed, New Programs
Established During the Summer
A turf field behind New Hall, a challenging new experience for incoming students, and a concentration in International Justice and Security are just some of the changes that UNH President Steven Kaplan notes have taken place over the summer. Dr. Kaplan points out that perhaps the most visible change is the ongoing construction of the David A. Beckerman Recreation Center on Boston Post Road. Basketball, racquetball, volleyball and multi-use athletic courts, state-of-the-art exercise machines, yoga classes and far more will be available to you once the Center opens in December. Fulbright Awarded
Andrea Hogan, director of International Services, is headed to Germany in October as a Fulbright Scholar to the United States—Germany International Education Administrators Program. Hogan was honored with the designation earlier this year. The program aims to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the residents of more than 150 countries that participate.

Director of Campus Recreation Appointed
Mike Schneider has been appointed Director of Campus Recreation. He is responsible for developing and implementing all aspects of the UNH Campus Recreation program including intramural sports, fitness, and health and wellness activities. Schneider comes to UNH with a wealth of experience after rising through the ranks over five years at the University of Missouri-Columbia, the state's flagship campus, which serves over 28,000 students.

Coup at the Hazell Nut Café
Stop by the Student-Run Hazell Nut Café in Maxcy
In just its first quarter of operation, the student-run Hazell Nut Café in Maxcy Hall served up a profit from its sale of Starbucks coffee, espresso, soda, pastries and the delectable ice cream Mini-Melts that sold solidly once the weather warmed. Students from Assistant Professor Dr. Jim Murdy’s service-management class ran the café, which opened in March and is named for alumnus Jeffery Hazell '83 B.S. Hotel/Restaurant Management.
Lee College Dean Announces Transition
Dr. Tom Johnson, founding dean of the UNH School of Public Safety and Professional Studies, which was recently renamed The Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences, announced in July that he will step down as dean at the finish of the 2007–2008 academic year. Dr. Johnson will remain at the University as director of the National Security Program.

University Student Conduct Board
The University Student Conduct Board has openings for faculty and administrators for the 2007-08 academic year. The Board hears cases involving alleged student, student group and student organization violations of University regulations. Student Conduct Board hearings are scheduled for a two-hour block of time. Learn more.

For more than 80 years, UNH has trained adult students to meet the needs of the community, often integrating education with experiences in business and industry. NCAA Action on Your Campus
All-American midfielder Selina Moylan '09 (pictured above) picked up an assist on Saturday and helped lead the 23rd-ranked UNH women's soccer team to a 1-0-1 record this weekend at the 2007 Connecticut Cup tournament. Women's Volleyball hosts the Baden Invitational at Charger Gymnasium this Friday and Saturday, while the men's soccer team opens their home schedule at Dodds Stadium on Sunday afternoon. 80 UNH Volunteers to Bond
With Community September 10
Eighty faculty and staff will fan out into West Haven for a day of community service on Monday, September 10 that includes activities such as painting and outdoor clearing. The day of service marks the launch of the University’s 2007 United Way campaign. This year’s theme is “007 UNH BONDs with our Community.” Campaign Co-Chairs Ron Nowaczyk, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Christie Boronico, Assistant Provost for Experiential Education, note the response from the campus has been overwhelming. Volunteers should report to the Alumni Lounge in Bartels Hall on Monday, September 10 at 8:30 a.m., where President Kaplan will address the group and a continental breakfast will be provided. Participants will receive T-shirts and will be taken to their service locations.
Library Hosts Fall Speakers Series
The underserved in Haiti, lobsters dying in the Sound, and an electronic nose being designed for NASA will be discussed during the Friends of the University of New Haven Library’s fall 2007 program. These lectures are held at the Marvin K. Peterson Library, located on the UNH campus, and are free and open to the public.     Mr. Peter Dodge, founder of Edge of the Woods Natural Market in New Haven, presents "Serving the Underserved in Haiti." This talk supplements the Common Read 2007 program selection of Mountains Beyond Mountains. The Common Read program is for all incoming freshmen and anyone in the UNH community who is interested.   • China Theme Kicks Off Campus International Coffee Hour Series
    UNH’s first International Coffee Hour of the academic year kicks off Thursday, September 20 with the theme Mid-Autumn or Harvest Moon Festival of China. Traditional “moon cakes” will be served during the celebration. All International Coffee Hours, which take place in the Alumni Lounge in Bartels Hall, and begin at 3:30 p.m., are generously sponsored by University College.

    Find the Club That's Right for You at Tuesday's Fair
    The University’s Fall Club Fair will be held Tuesday, August 28 from 4-6 p.m. in the Maxcy Quad. Find out about the different clubs and organizations on your campus and get involved. Club and organization presidents: Log on to www.chargervoice.com to reserve your spot at the fair. All clubs and organizations are welcome. You do not need to be USGA recognized.

    Bronx Zoo Trip Set for September 2
    Don’t miss a trip to the Bronx Zoo set for Sunday, September 2 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The bus leaves at 10 a.m. Sign up by Tuesday, August 28 at noon at studentactivities@newhaven.edu. The first 48 students to send their names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses will get seats on the bus and will be contacted on Tuesday. Those who reserve a seat and do not attend will still be charged $100.

    There's a Special Event for You on September 12
