Embracing Joie De Vivre: Students Travel
To France for Two UNH Courses

Seven UNH students visited France from May 19 to May 30 for two summer session courses, World War II and Art History. They were led by English Department Practitioner-in Residence Dr. David Perry. Their WWII course was taught from the battlefields of Normandy and the art history course from the ramparts of Le Mont Saint Michelle to the Louvre in Paris. The students, who lived in a historic French castle for 10 days, received six credits for their work. Participants included, picture above from left, Andrew Katrenya, sophomore; Mike Milum, sophomore; Madison Soldano, sophomore; Karina Robinson, sophomore; Louis Faiella, senior; Yessenia Vargas, junior; Dr. Perry and Sara McGuire, junior. Dr. Perry plans to develop a six-week summer program based in France.

UNH Receives Diversity in Athletics Award
UNH was one of 26 institutions across the country to receive a Diversity in Athletics Award for the 2007-08 school year, in addition to being recognized in the categories “Value and Attitudinal Diversity” and “Gender Diversity” of department employees. To receive this award, institutions must be recognized in eight categories, including overall excellence in diversity, diversity strength and gender equity compliance, through research conducted at the Laboratory for Diversity in Sport at Texas A&M University. Staff Appreciation Lunch a Culinary and Social Success
Despite an unexpectedly rainy day, the President’s Staff Appreciation Picnic attracted dozens of University staff members who availed themselves of food and camaraderie in Bartels Hall, the campus center. A Radiant Day for Joyful Graduates
A sunny day, concise, inspirational speeches and congratulatory hugs and handshakes dominated the University’s 85 Annual Commencement at DellaCamera Stadium May 24. Four hundred seventy-nine undergraduate students and 371 graduate students proudly joined the ranks of thousands of UNH alumni. Commencement speaker Dick Vermeil, famed NFL coach, at left top, poses with President Kaplan before the ceremonies begin.

An Experiential Education Jamboree
The National Society of Experiential Education visited campus recently to offer Experiential Education Academy seminars to UNH faculty, staff and guests. Topics included service learning, civic engagement and alternative instruction. Visitors from near – Sacred Heart and Fairfield universities and the University of Connecticut – farther, including New York, Massachusetts and New Hampshire – and far, including California, participated. Another 15 members of the University community will receive their NSEE Experiential Education Certification. Participants already are being accepted for the UNH EE Academy class of 2009. Moves at Maxcy Hall
Jerry L. Allen, Ph.D., interim dean of the College of Business and professor and former chair of the Department of Communication and Marketing, has accepted the position of associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

 

Dental Company Endows Scholarship,
Pays Visit to Dental Hygiene

Dr. William B. Dragan, left in photo, a former Stamford dentist and founder of Centrix Dental in Shelton, and his son Bill Dragan, at right, toured the University’s Dental Hygiene facility this past week, led by Dental Hygiene Director Sandra D’Amato-Palumbo. Centrix has funded an annual scholarship through the Dental Hygiene School, but this year decided to endow it for perpetuity. “We are dedicated to supporting oral health in America,” Bill Dragan said. “Too many people don’t get basic care. By supporting the school, we support those efforts.” Centrix sells it dental delivery systems and materials in more than 50 countries.

 

Views of the Sound to Come
Land is being cleared on campus for UNH’s new 400-bed, five-story residence hall. The building, due to be completed by fall 2009, will include views of the Long Island Sound.

United Way Days of Caring
The United Way is once again seeking volunteers to participate in its Days of Caring, from September 15 through September 21. In 2007, about 80 volunteers from UNH worked to improve various areas in West Haven by weeding, painting or simply playing with children. West Haven Launches
‘Connecticut’s Friendliest City’ Campaign

West Haven kicked off its “Connecticut’s Friendliest City” campaign on May 20 on the steps of City Hall. The mayor and other dignitaries spoke, the West Haven Marching Band and cheerleaders performed and many city residents were on hand.

 

Summer Mail Hours
The mail department will close 1:30 p.m. every Friday this summer. In order to have your department’s mail ready for next day service, it must be delivered by 11 a.m. Friday morning.

Brain Food Event
Talk about the book and see the movie “Fahrenheit 451,” as part of The Big Read on campus Tuesday, June 10. In conjunction with several groups including the National Endowment for the Arts and the Connecticut Library Consortium, the University is sponsoring the event, held to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Room 203 of Kaplan Hall. Wes David and Holly Salmon will lead a discussion on the book. The University community and the public are invited. Earlier that day, West Haven students, who have read the book, will be on campus to take part in a closed group discussion from 8:30 a.m. to noon in Room 120 of Buckman Hall.

UNH Artist at White Space Gallery
John Arabolos, professional interior designer and artist-in-residence here at UNH, will have his work featured at the White Space Gallery from June 4 to July 12. The show, titled “Fabric of Life: Investigation of Chaotic Symmetries,” includes John’s investigation into chaotic patterns found in nature. The White Space Gallery is located at 1020 Chapel St. on the 2nd floor in downtown New Haven. Visit www.whitespacegallery.com for more information. UNH alum Marie Accrino ’70 is the director of marketing and sales at the Gallery.

UNH Offers Home to Firefighters for Training
Before the house owned by UNH at 121 Ruden St. was demolished to make room for parking adjacent to the new residence hall, the University invited the Allingtown Fire Department to use it for training.

A Record Year for OHSSP
The 36th class of the Outstanding High School Seniors Program (OHSSP) graduated on Wednesday, May 28 with the highest GPA average in the program’s history. The students who participate in this program, who have proved themselves by possessing an exemplary academic record, are able to finish their last semester of coursework at UNH, giving them an additional head start for college. Out of more than 300 local students, only 11 were chosen for the program. Each student received a full scholarship to UNH for the spring semester.

Grab Your 15 Minutes of Fame
At UNH’s Faculty/Staff Talent Show

The first annual UNH Faculty/Staff Talent Show will take place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3 in Dodds Theatre. A reception will follow the event, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Prizes will be given for top performances. Those interested in performing or helping to plan the event should contact Jim Monahan at jmonahan@newhaven.edu or 203-932-7279. The campus community is invited and encouraged to attend.

Three Students Named to IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-Region Teams
Brigid Brady and Mallory and Ashley Ferrandiz were recently named to the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-Region Teams for 2008. Brady was named to the first team while Mallory and Ashley were named to the second. These nominations also made each of the girls eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA (Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association) Lacrosse All-American teams. Common Read Books
This year’s book, “The Kite Runner”, will only be given to students in order to be as fiscally responsible as possible. However, by the end of the week 10 copies will be made available for check-out at the library for all faculty and staff.

First All-American in UNH Woman’s Lacrosse History
Brigid Brady was named Second Team IWLCA/US Lacrosse Division II All-American, making her the first nationally recognized women’s lacrosse player in UNH history. Brady was one of only 32 athletes selected to this honor, a week after being named First Team All-North Region, which made her eligible for All-American honors. Women’s Lacrosse Midfielder Earns Academic All-District Honors
Kristine Lambracht was recently given the honor of being named to the Second Team Academic All-District by ESPN The Magazine College Division. She was also chosen as a women’s at-large selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), which is a program that honors women in a variety of sports and allows them to be eligible for Academic All-American honors once on the First Team. Lambracht, who carries a 3.98 GPA, started each of the 17 games played in UNH’s 14-win record-breaking past season. To read more about Kristine Lambracht and her other accomplishments, click here.
