Faculty Excellence Awards – 2008

Dr. Allen Sack presented the University’s “Last Lecture” Wednesday, May 14 during the Faculty Excellence Awards. Hazardous Waste Removal
The University’s annual collection and removal of hazardous chemical materials will begin soon. If your department has any chemicals that require disposal, please send an inventory with the amount, location and a description of the material to Bob Rychlovsky at brychlovsky@newhaven.edu no later than Friday, May 30. Alum Beckerman Honored
By CT Anti-Defamation League

The Connecticut Office of the Anti-Defamation League honored David A. Beckerman on May 15 with the 2008 ADL Greater New Haven Torch of Liberty Award for his exemplary service to the Greater New Haven community. Pictured at the event from left are UNH President Steven H. Kaplan, David Beckerman, and Samuel S. Bergami, Jr., chair of the UNH Board of Governors. Read more about Beckerman’s contributions to the community. Thanks to the support of Beckerman, a 1966 graduate of UNH, the University is now home to the popular $15.5 million David A. Beckerman Recreation Center.

Students’ Ingenuity and Creativity
Recognized With Prestigious Award

Three UNH students—Omer Kizilcik, of Ansonia, Peter Taruska, of New Haven, and Krishna Bhargava Ogety, of West Haven—have been selected for the 2008 Central Connecticut Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) Scholarship for exhibiting “ingenuity and creativity in the field of industrial engineering.” Click here to learn more.

Student-Athletic Advisory Committee
Names New Executive Board

The UNH Student-Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) announced its new executive board for the 2008-2009 academic year. Sophomore Austin Michalski, left, of the men's volleyball team, will take over as SAAC president, and co-vice presidents will be junior Charisse Cotton of the women's volleyball team and Ryan Freitas of the cross country and track & field teams. Junior Brigid Brady of the women's lacrosse team will serve as secretary and sophomore Corinne Merjave of the women's cross country/track and field teams will take over as treasurer. The mission of the NCAA and the University of New Haven's SAAC is to enhance the total student–athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image.

Farewell Reception for Robert Greenberg
The University community is invited to a reception for Robert Greenberg, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, in Room 124 of Maxcy Hall. Dr. Greenberg is moving to Manhattan to become professor and associate dean of Arts and Sciences at Hunter College in New York City.

Farewell Reception
A farewell reception for Dr. Thomas A. Johnson will be held from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 20 in the Alumni Lounge of Bartels Hall, the campus center. Dr. Johnson will be departing UNH after 13 years as the dean of the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences.

The University community is invited to bid farewell and good luck to Susan Cusano at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 22 in the Moulton Lounge of Bartels Hall, the campus center. Refreshments will be served. A Dinner for Dr. Johnson
The Oak Lane Golf and Country Club will host a retirement dinner for Dr. Thomas A. Johnson beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, June 6. The cost for the event is $40, which includes dinner, gratuity, contribution toward the retirement gift and musical entertainment. A table for six may be reserved for $240. New Masters Program in New London
UNH’s Southeastern campus recently announced the addition of a Master of Science in Professional Education, focusing on current trends in the classroom. In kicking off the program, UNH Southeastern will offer a free seminar with CEU credits for teachers from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, May 22 in the Weller Center at Mitchell College. Take a Walk to Celebrate
National Employee Fitness Day

Wednesday May 21 is National Employee Health and Fitness Day. Join the Campus Recreation staff for a health walk around campus from noon-12:30 p.m. In the event of rain the walk will be held on the Beckerman Center track. Contact Michelle Pratt at 931-2963 with questions about the event.

Open Enrollment for
Employee Benefits Scheduled

Three meetings have been scheduled for the benefits open enrollment period, which runs from Wednesday, May 21 through Tuesday, June 10. The meetings will be held Wednesday, May 21 at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the Upper Lounge of Bartels Hall, the campus center. Human Resources will e-mail employees detailed information, the benefit election forms, and definition of benefits by Tuesday, May 20. Please make every effort to attend the meetings as new benefit plans will be discussed.

Reminder to Graduating or Non-Returning Students
Students who will not return to UNH in the fall need to change their address using www.usps.com/moversguide or bring forwarding labels to the mailroom in Maxcy Hall. First-class mail will be forwarded, but all other mail will be returned to the sender. Students must also return their mail keys or pay a $25 fee. Those staying over the summer must go to the mailroom and sign up to be placed on the summer list.

Graduate Students - Apply for an Assistantship
Applications are now being accepted from all graduate students for open positions this fall. To start the application process, click here.

Have Time to Fill Out a Survey?
Mike Schneider, director of Campus Recreation, is looking for input from students as new programs are developed and changes are made to the services already provided. If you have already completed a paper copy of the survey, there is no need to take it again. Click here to take the electronic version of the survey.

Want to Teach Group Fitness?
If you are interested in teaching a group fitness class, UNH will be hosting the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America’s group fitness workshop and exam in the David A. Summer Help Wanted in the Seton Gallery
The Seton Gallery is currently accepting resumes for summer employment to run from May 22 through August 10, 2008. Duties may include monitoring the gallery during open hours, mailing postcards and preparing flyers for upcoming events, and assisting with the installation of artwork. Students qualified for this position must enjoy working with the public, be dependable, be able to represent the University in a positive way, and be computer literate with database knowledge.
