Take a Walk to the Spring Bartels
Lecture April 22, 11 a.m.

At the Spring Bartels Lecture this week, Ray Margiano ’69 CEO, president and founder of Foot Solutions, Inc. will present “Footsteps to Entrepreneurship,” the story of his business success, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22 in Dodds Theatre. Margiano, who taught evening classes at UNH early in his career, took his start-up company to $100 million in sales in just six short years. Recently, Margiano published a book “Balance Walking - Changing Your Life in Just 15 Minutes a Day.” Design student Ryan Brelling, whose publicity poster won the event contest, will present a framed copy to Margiano. #8 Ranked Women’s Lacrosse Team Continues Undefeated Streak
Don’t Miss Home Game April 24, 4 p.m., Kayo Field

On Sunday, an overtime goal from Ashley Ferrandiz with 51 seconds left lifted the University of New Haven women's lacrosse team to an 18-17 victory over Saint Anselm College. The win marks the second consecutive come from behind one-goal victory for UNH. In Friday's match the team defeated Merrimack College, 20-19 after trailing by as many as seven. The Chargers (13-2, 3-2 ECC) have now won five matches in a row. UNH has two games remaining on the schedule against Bentley College -- on campus Thursday, April 24 at 4 p.m. at Kayo Field -- and at Philadelphia University. The University of New Haven, in conjunction with Columbia University, will sponsor a symposium on sports ethics at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24 in Manhattan. Panelist members include Chris Bevilacqua, co-founder of CSTV Networks, Adolpho Birch, general counsel for the National Football League, and Robert Lipsyte, an award-winning sports journalist. National Day of Silence

This year’s Day of Silence will take place all day Friday, April 25 and will honor the memory of Lawrence King, an Oxnard, Calif., student killed in February for his sexual orientation. UNH Victimology Club Remembers Virginia Tech

Last Wednesday, April 16 marked the one year anniversary of the Virginia Tech shootings, during which 32 students and faculty were killed. The Victimology Club organized a “lie in” using student volunteers to represent each of the victims. Dressed in black and wearing ribbons made by friends and family members of the fallen, the students laid on the ground for three minutes, the time it took for the shooter to purchase a gun. The Hartford Courant, New Haven Register and WTNH Channel 8, Fox 61 and NBC 30 were on hand to cover the event. The mother of Jessica Santos, the UNH student who was shot and killed near her home in New York, spoke to the campus and the media about the importance of gun laws and implored everyone to fight for stricter regulations on who can purchase a weapon. It Floats!
Maiden Voyage of Engineering Students’
Concrete Canoe A Success

Civil engineering students demonstrated the seaworthiness of their latest engineering marvel—a concrete canoe— called Chief II, on Friday. The Hartford Courant, New Haven Register and WTNH Channel 8, NBC 30 and WFSB Channel 3 stopped by to cover the event at the Branford Supply Pond. On hand to proudly watch their students’ accomplishment were Dr. Jean Nocito-Gobel, Associate Professor of Engineering and Dr. Matthew Griffiths, Associate Professor of Physics. The student team successfully built the 20-foot-long, 330-pound canoe from carbon-fiber reinforced concrete in preparation for the Metropolitan Regional Concrete Canoe Conference race on April 27, at Flushing Meadows Park, Queens, NY, hosted by Brooklyn Polytechnic University. UNH Scholar/Athletes Honored
More than 100 University of New Haven student-athletes, parents, faculty and staff gathered in the Bartels Hall, the campus center, Thursday for the Department of Athletics' Dean's List Breakfast. Honored were UNH student-athletes who achieved a 3.50 grade point average or better in the spring 2007 and fall 2007 semesters, earning them a spot on the University's Dean's List. E3 Once Again Dances to Victory
The University of New Haven dance crew E3 won the April 19 dance challenge on "Showtime at the Apollo," appearing on national TV in front of millions of viewers. Environmental Science and Marine Biology Students
Present Research at International Meeting

Three graduate students in the Environmental Science Program and one undergraduate from the Marine Biology Program presented their research at the Annual Benthic Ecology Meetings recently held in Providence, Rhode Island. This event has international attendance and is the main conference for scientists who study seafloor ecology. Dr. Roman Zajac is the faculty research advisor for these projects.

Pictured (left to right) are Mark Pachlhofer, who presented a GIS model that predicts the risk of invasive species in coastal habitats; Leslie McGuffie, an undergraduate who presented her research on the reproductive ecology of a pollution indicator species, which was supported by a 2007 UNH SURF Award; Craig Schnieder, who presented his work on how coastal erosion may be affecting tidal flat communities and habitats, and Daniel Pinho who presented work on testing models that predict habitats that may be good candidates for Marine Protected Areas at the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.

Remembering a Scholar and Friend
This past Wednesday, April 16, friends and family gathered in the Moulton Lounge of Bartels Hall, the campus center, to honor the life of UNH faculty member Milly Bohannah. Kay Cuozzo, pictured at left, spoke of Milly’s accomplishments and devoted service to the University. Several letters from grateful students, read by Alice Guido, were also presented to the crowded room, giving another dimension to the impact Milly had on all with whom she worked. The writings of John Donne, William Shakespeare and Gerard Manley Hopkins were read at the conclusion of the service for Milly, a beloved and respected member of the UNH community for over 20 years.

The Crisis in Darfur:
Hear A Witness, Become A Witness

The campus community is invited to a presentation at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 24, on the crisis in Darfur, given by Tim Salem, vice principal of Danbury High School, and Danbury High School students. Two student-produced DVDs will be screened during this presentation. Faculty members who are covering related information in their classes are encouraged to bring their students. Remembering the Holocaust
The Fifth Annual Holocaust Remembrance event, at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 29 in the Marvin K. Peterson Library, will feature alumnus and Holocaust survivor Martin Schiller, author of “Bread, Butter And Sugar: A Boy’s Journey Through The Holocaust And Postwar Europe.” A list of names will also be read of individuals who perished in the Holocaust who were relatives of those in the UNH community. Any member of the UNH community who lost a relative in the Holocaust is encouraged to submit the name to Ira Kleinfeld at ikleinfeld@newhaven.edu to be included on the list.

Child Prodigy/UNH Adjunct Faculty member
Offers Concert At UNH April 27

Pianist Eva Virsik will perform compositions by Mozart, Schumann and Debussy in an upcoming recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 27 in the Alumni Lounge of Bartels Hall, the campus center. Considered a child prodigy, Virsik has been composing since age 5 and has won numerous competitions. She is presently an adjunct faculty member here at UNH and expects to travel throughout Europe next year for several solo and orchestral performances.

Rep. Lawlor Participates in Anti-Crime Bill Signing
State Representative Michael Lawlor, who is also an assistant professor of Criminal Justice at UNH, participated in the signing of a landmark anti-crime bill with President Bush and several lawmakers from around the country. The signing, which took place on April 9 in the White House, authorized various grants to be allocated to government agencies and non-profit groups in hopes of reducing repeat offenders and probation or parole violations.

Set for May 1 in Bartels

Student and faculty will showcase their unique experiences at the 2nd Annual Experiential Education Day Celebration on Thursday, May 1. Examples include students/faculty and community collaborations in research, service, and international programs. The tentative agenda begins with a breakfast from 8 a.m.–9:30 a.m. in the Alumni Lounge, Bartels Hall, the campus center, followed by panel presentations from 9:30 a.m.-11 a.m. and the Experiential Education Fair from 11 a.m. –1:30 p.m.

Dr. Allen Sack will discuss “Athletic Scholarships: From Educational Gifts to Contracts for Hire.” He will review NCAA changes over the past century and refer to his recently published book on the same subject.

Attention Graduating or Non Returning Students
Students who will not return to UNH in the fall need to change their address using www.usps.com/moversguide or bring forwarding labels to the mailroom in Maxcy Hall. First class mail will be forwarded, but all other mail will be returned to the sender. Students must also return their mail keys or pay a $25 fee. Those staying over the summer must go to the mailroom and sign up to be placed on the summer list.

Evening Student Council Elections Open
Nominations are open for the positions of president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer for the Evening Student Council. Requirements include being in good academic standing, enrollment in at least one three-credit undergraduate course as an evening student, completion of at least 12 semester credit hours and a minimum 2.5 cumulative G.P.A. Benefits include building your resume and adding experience as well as tuition remission for two three-credit classes. Women’s Clinic Appointments

There are six days left this semester for students to make appointments at the campus Women’s Clinic. Clinic day are as follows: Thursday, April 24, 9 a.m.– 2 p.m.; Thursday, May 1, 9 a.m.–2 p.m.; Thursday May 8, 9 a.m.– 2 p.m.; and Thursday, May 15, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Services include yearly GYN check-ups, pap smear testing, STD testing, diagnosis of vaginal infections, prescription for birth control, depo provera injections, contraceptive discussion, and pregnancy testing. Staff can also answer questions regarding your health and sexuality and the new HPV Vaccine and ways you can obtain that injection. Please call 203.932.7079.

Summer Help Wanted in the Seton Gallery
The Seton Gallery is currently accepting resumes for summer employment that will run from May 22 through August 10, 2008. Duties may include monitoring the gallery during open hours, mailing postcards and preparing flyers for upcoming events, and assisting with the installation of artwork. Students qualified for this position must enjoy working with the public, be dependable, be able to represent the University in a positive way, and be computer literate with database knowledge.
