Setting the Pace: Mary Madenski, Library Clerk II, Circulation Desk, Marvin K. Peterson Library

Recognized for her impressive customer service, Mary Madenski is known for making students feel welcome at the Library. “If Mary does not have the answer to a student’s question, she will help him or her find the answer,” says Library Director Hanko Doko, adding that over the years she has received many compliments about Mary’s high level of service to students.

Madenski notes that the Circulation Desk “consists of dedicated and caring employees who work as a team to ‘bring together’ research materials to meet students' needs, whether they are books, journals, microfiche, a professor's reserve items, online databases, interlibrary loans and government documents. We're usually the first people students see when they come into the Library,” she says, “and we are ready and willing to jump in and help them in any way we can.”

Her Goal:

“I work to raise awareness of the valuable resources at the Marvin K. Peterson Library, which include the knowledgeable people working here, as well as paper, print, and online resources. Our Librarians are second to none, and work hard to see that each student finds exactly what his or her research requires. Many have said to me: ‘I know this is a dumb question.’ Once we teach students the tools available to them in the Library, they gain confidence.

Her Approach:

“Students today can be more stressed than ever. Many have a difficult balancing act that can include the demands of classes, social life, jobs, careers, and families. My approach is to help each student who visits the Library feel welcome and relaxed by providing a comfortable environment conducive to study and far from worries for awhile. We even have a Jazzman's Café on site to de-stress with friends!

The Bottom Line:

“I love books and I love people. My job at the Circulation Desk puts me right in the crossroads!”
