Remembering a Scholar and Friend
The University community is invited to attend a memorial service for Milly Bohannah at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 16 in the Moulton Lounge of Bartels Hall, the campus center. A respected member of the University of New Haven community for more than 20 years, Bohannah served as adjunct faculty in the English Department, as an academic skills counselor in the Office of Academic Services and as a tutor in the Writing Lab of the Center for Learning Resources, and will be remembered by her many friends and colleagues for her professionalism, her love of Shakespeare and her unfailing dedication to her students.

More than $165,000 Raised for Scholarships
At UNH’s Annual Scholarship Ball
More than 420 students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends attended this year’s annual Scholarship Ball on Saturday, which netted more than $165,000 for student scholarships. The event, which included silent and live auctions, honored UNH alumni Martin J. O'Connor, B.A. '76, History, UNH associate professor and campus minister, pictured above with students; J. David Scheiner, B.S. '71, Management Science, president and chief operating officer, Macy’s Florida; and Anthony J. Sparano III, B.S. '84, Criminal Justice, Miami Dolphins head coach. Paying Tribute to a Slain Student
The First Jessica N. Santos Walk, to benefit the Jessica N. Santos Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of New Haven, will be held this Saturday, April 19 at the Oak Street Beach and Deck at the boardwalk in West Haven. The fund aids students pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice and Forensic Science. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.; the walk will begin at 10:30 a.m. More information is available at www.rememberingjessica.com. Santos, a Tarrytown, N.Y., resident, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Yonkers Aug. 27, 2007, a day before she began her sophomore year at the University.

The group’s exhibit reservation is11 a.m. Afterwards, everyone will eat lunch in the food court in the mall (which all the students will pay for), and then walk around Times Square for an hour or so before catching a 5:07 p.m. train, arriving back to New Haven at 7 p.m. The trip advisor can bring one guest. The 2nd Annual Defend Against Cancer 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament, to benefit the Jimmy V. Foundation for Cancer Research, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 18 in the David A. Beckerman Recreation Center. The event will be run by an Event Management class. Move Your Feet – to the Spring Bartels Lecture
Ray Margiano ’69, the Spring Bartels Fellow, will present the lecture “Footsteps to Entrepreneurship” at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 22 in Dodds Theatre. Food Drive for Homeless Veterans
Three students in the Dietetics program here at UNH will run a food drive beginning Monday, April 14 to support homeless veterans in the West Haven and New Haven areas. Boxes will be placed throughout campus for donations. For further information, visit www.fooddriveforvets.org.
Dr. Dinegar Remembered
More than 100 mourners gathered at Dodds Theatre Monday, April 7 to remember Dr. Caroline Dinegar, a longtime Political Science professor at the University who filled a lengthy list of other jobs during her time here. President Steven H. Kaplan, Political Science Professor James Dull and Brian DeBlasiss ’08 Political Science, at right, were among several speakers who recalled Dr. Dinegar’s commitment and tenacity.
Grants to Assist in the Study of Lyme Disease
Dr. Eva Sapi, associate professor of Biology and Environmental Science at the University of New Haven, was awarded two grants to assist in her research on Lyme disease this summer. Dr. Sapi will study both a causative agent of Lyme disease as well as parasites that may be found in ticks, in the hopes of furthering early detection and successful treatment of the disease. West Haven Chamber Lauds University Director
Virginia Zawoy, the University’s director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, has won a Chamber Service Award from the West Haven Chamber of Commerce for her efforts to strengthen the bonds between the University and the town of West Haven, and for her success in helping revitalize downtown West Haven. Zawoy has served on the Chamber Board since 2000, has been secretary for four years and co-chair of the Legislative Committee for three years. She served on the original West Haven Train Station Committee, distributed to faculty and staff a petition in favor of the station being built, and wrote letters to legislators in favor of the project, which will help to boost economic development efforts in town. At this time, $26 million has been approved for construction of the station.
UNH, Columbia University co-sponsor Sports Ethics Symposium
The University of New Haven, in conjunction with Columbia University, will sponsor a symposium on sports ethics at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24 in Manhattan. Panelist members include Chris Bevilacqua, co-founder of CSTV Networks, Adolpho Birch, general counsel for the National Football League, and Robert Lipsyte, an award-winning sports journalist. Hear A Witness, Become A Witness

Child Prodigy Offers Concert
At UNH April 27
Pianist Eva Virsik will perform compositions by Mozart, Schumann and Debussy in an upcoming recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 27 in the Alumni Lounge of Bartels Hall, the campus center. Considered a child prodigy, Eva has been composing since age 5 and has won numerous competitions. She is presently an adjunct faculty member here at UNH and expects to travel throughout Europe next year for several solo and orchestral performances.
Remembering the Holocaust
The Fifth Annual Holocaust Remembrance event, at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 29 in the Marvin K. Peterson Library, will feature alumnus and Holocaust survivor Martin Schiller, author of “Bread, Butter And Sugar: A Boy’s Journey Through The Holocaust And Postwar Europe.” A list of names will also be read of individuals who perished in the Holocaust who were relatives of those in the UNH community. Any member of the UNH community who lost a relative in the Holocaust is encouraged to submit the name to Ira Kleinfeld at ikleinfeld@newhaven.edu to be included on the list.
NOTE: The bookstore has also ordered copies of Martin Schiller’s book to provide the campus with additional insight into his talk.

This year’s Day of Silence will take place all day Friday, April 25 and will honor the memory of Lawrence King, an Oxnard, Calif., student killed in February for his sexual orientation. Summer Help Wanted in the Seton Gallery
The Seton Gallery is currently accepting resumes for summer employment that will run from May 22 through August 10, 2008. Duties may include monitoring the gallery during open hours, mailing postcards and preparing flyers for upcoming events, and assisting with the installation of artwork. Students qualified for this position must enjoy working with the public, be dependable, be able to represent the University in a positive way, and be computer literate with database knowledge. Volunteers Needed for Summer Concert
SCOPE is currently seeking the assistance of several volunteers to help with lead in, set up, security, and lead out of the summer concert featuring Kat DeLuna, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and Lifehouse. The concert will take place Friday, May 2. Application forms are available in the SCOPE Office and must be returned by Monday, April 21.
OPT Rules Information Session
This session will discuss the new rules of OPT including a 17-month extension for STEM students and new reporting measures. The session will begin at noon Thursday, April 24 in the Upper Student Lounge of Bartels Hall, the campus center.

Ten design firms represented by 15 alumni will be exhibiting interior design work from their firms during the Interior Design Alumni Career Day from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, May 1 in the Upper Student Lounge of Bartels Hall, the campus center. This event offers interior design students an opportunity to view the work of alumni and ask questions about their career paths, experiences, job opportunities, and education at UNH.
Wiffle Ball Tournament
Sign up this week through April 23 in Bartels Hall, the campus center, to participate in the University’s Spring wiffle ball tournament. Teams may comprise five to seven students; individuals will be put on a free agent list. The tournament will take place from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 3 on the turf field behind New Hall. All participants will receive a free T-shirt. Food and beverages will be available.

Remember UNH ID When
Traveling on Dattco Shuttle
Dattco shuttle bus users are reminded to carry their UNH identification card with them, and produce it if asked to do so by the bus driver. The shuttles are for the exclusive use of UNH students. We do recognize that students may have guests visiting and that there may be a need for them to ride the shuttle. We will be working to develop a guest shuttle pass and should have one ready in the near future.
